myspace/FB/twitter is too lowbrow to attain true sentience.

There's a flaw in that equation and that's Twitter. Twitter is the most pointless thing I think I have ever seen on the internet. http://isitchristmas.com/ is more useful and entertaining.

Google could be Skynet. By the time people start getting freaked out and *****ing about them it might be too late!

    I like that.

I agree with the above - myspace has jumped the shark and isn't cool anymore. Twitter, well I just joined a while ago and from what I see it's too full of MLMers, "SEO Experts," "CEOs" (I supposed independent Avon reps and realtors are their own CEO), who tweet constantly and usually about their own biz. I can take some biz promo, like 1-2x a day. Actually the worst activity on Twitter is what I've dubbed twitterbating, which is self-congratulatory and disturbingly narrow talk about how awesome Twitter is and how superior it is to other forms of communication. I swear if I'm going to unfollow everyone who reposts "Twitter is the theater of the mind" or "Is 140 cramping your style?"

It's still my favorite. I like that I can add music and layouts. I wish Facebook would adopt those features.

I think twitter and blogs are full of people who think they are important and relevant, but the only people who think that about them is themselves. If they are a hot chick, then likely a bunch of guys also let the girl think they agree on her importance, but it's just a ruse to get into her pants.

I've never used or even visited the twitter website, but as I understand it allows you to send small messages, "tweets" to people who subscribe to your twitter account. I can't think of anyone in the world I care enough about to want to follow their actions from moment to moment. I can see how some losers with no life would be interested in following the twitter of a celebrity, so they can somehow live vicariously through them, but other than people with no lives, I can't see who on earth would want to follow someone else's actions? The only exception would be for business/news info - for example, following a twitter of Cramer, if you like his finance advice, or O'Reilly if you like his news content.

blogs are similar. Actually, twitter is just "push" technology for blogs... instead of someone coming to read your blog, you force-feed the entries out to your userbase. There are some blogs that are interesting, ones that are topical where a subject matter expert provides an ongoing information review and commentary, or provides some useful and helpful info. But you come across so many blogs of people just telling everyone about their absolutely mundane and forgettable life... and all I can wonder is who cares enough about someone to actually be interested to read their daily diary?

That's exactly what I hated about MySpace from the get-go... most people had unbearably CRAPPY layouts and even worse taste in music. I like FB in that it forces everyone to have a nicely laid out and clean profile that loads in under 3 seconds.

    I agree

I gave up on myspace because of having to navigate crap templates that load slowly, music I dont want to listen to, etc...myspace is now solely for the teen and pre teen crowd.

Facebook rules though. Its never been easier to keep in touch with friends and family.

Haha, just signed into MySpace, and alot of people have dropped it. Someday, Facebook will be the same way, and we will look at it the way we look at MySpace. :D

I hope facebook doesn't decide to become more like myspace. I think they're headed that way though. :(

I doubt that the social networking sites will contribute much toward the creation of AI though it will make excellent source material for digging up crap on people.... Apart from that I think Google seems to have momentum heading in that direction. It will be interesting to see how Stephen Wolfram's Alpha project evolves in the future, read his book A New Kind of Science a few years back when it first came out and there were some interesting bits.

There was the special on CNBC last night called Big Brother, Big Business.

They discussed the possibility that Google will buy/sell it's users personal information.

Of course they declined comment, which in my opinion leads to further suspicion.

Could happen.... seems a bit short sighted to just straight up sell it. I think a lot of info is already going out through Google Analytics and other web site type services. In the long term that data set will be used by your personal AI assistant to live your life.

Myspace has gotten carried away with ads, it's so aggravating to have to "x" an ad box to continue what you're doing...every min or so. I also can't stand all of the applications on Facebook. Everytime I login I have a bunch of invites, requests, and quizzes--to deny. No, I am not interested in adding a plant to your friend garden and I don't want to take a quiz to see how well I know you, you crazy narcissists!

    /rant

Now, who wants to add me on Facebook? :D

Not only the ads, but all the teenage BS drama seems to happen on myspace.

No kidding! I've deleted people for posting too many dramatic bulletins and status updates. One girl I know messaged me to ask why I deleted her. I actually told her it was b/c I didn't want to hear about her BS drama anymore. I can't handle that crap, but I like keeping in touch w/old friends that aren't on Facebook. :)
