Guys does anybody knows the story behind this 83 308 QV? I picked up at the Copart auction in Chicago 3 months ago It has a salvage title with some damage on the rear left suspension. The car looks like it was well taken care of it has newer 16" wheels and Nicks /electromotive direct ignition, 37K miles on it and no rust. The exhaust has been replaced with some aftermarket unit and a homemade cover. Does anybody knows the history of the car?

Run a Carfax. It will show what cities it was registered in and you can call the local dealer or mechanics with the VIN to see if they ever worked on the car.

What did that car over the block for? It would have to be super cheap to overcome the salvage title and the misc work stil necessary to make it driveable.

Could it have been a flood damaged car. It looks to good for a salvage car. The rear damage doesn't look that bad unless the suspension and transaxle are damaged. Looks like a good rebuild for someone.

I have a friend who owns a car lot. He runs carfax for me occassionally. I never get detail like this. I just ran one on a 308 and it came back with 2 entries. I thought in recent years all states reported during inspections and registrations.....

Carfax sucks and it is only as good as the reporting that they get, I have seen at least 3 cars I know were total losses and they had clean carfaxes. Then a car like this that looks just fine other than a little damage to the rear and it is a total loss? WTF unreal.. even if it has drivetrain damage I can see that being a total loss you blow up your motor the insurance company doesnt total the car.

And many states do not have yearly inspections so some cars will never have that much info.

Carfax is a guide line at best, and is full of short comings. I have posted here before the discrepencys of Carfax. Let me list some again just for information. We see vehicles frequently in our service facitlies for pre purchase inspections that look very good from the street but upon detailed inspections they have had severe crash damage and repaired. You might wonder how this can happen, and not be listed thru carfax.

Carfax only reports what is reported to them. If for expample you own a car and have an accident that requires repair, and if your insurance company repairs the damage THEY ARE NOT under any obligation to report collision history to Carfax dispite what carfax advertises. Carfax has no legal or official tie with insurance companties, state motor vehicle departments what so ever. As a matter of fact some states have a privacy law that forbids carfax from obtaining official records from these states.

A good share of their information comes from dealers and license agencies, that report some service history, title and transfers. They usually cut a deal with Carfax to get a reduced rate on carfax reports by selling carfax this information. Basicly the dealer or license agency is selling your personal information to an internet sorce. The information that carfax has obtained is not necessarily accurate official or complete by any means. Do not take their report as the last word.

There is no 100% perfect solution for finding the real story about a used car. There are some states now that require insurnace companies to list and report salvage, flood damage and bio-hazard cars, either with a branded title or a salavage certificate. Use carfax as a start point only, like computers garbage in garbage out, its only as good as the information they get. There is no substitution for a hands on physical inspection of a potental purchase by a reputable service facility that deal or truly knows the vehicle you are interested in.

Carfax can't tell you if you're looking at a good car, or a pile of junk. However, it would be foolish not to check it even when looking at a great car. If there is a problem, such as odometer discrepancy, or even a simple error, you might not know until you try to sell to the next guy.

I got the car for $13200, and its in much better shape than my 1981 that I paid $26500, considering the wheels and ignition its a steal. Although its a gamble buying it from just a picture this time it paid off!! Cost of repair somewhere around $2500.

Any way you look at it, you have probably saved another 308 from an ugly demise. Well done! I have bought two cars in the last 6 months - just because they needed to be saved; '62 Triumph TR3 and a '61 M-B 180b. Some day they'll go to another good home...
