I put in a new radio the other day and found this red wire attached to some of the radio power leads. It's a very strange wire... has an insulated "inner" part and only two strands of wire. It runs down behind the footwell plate. Just wondering if someone knows what it is... before I go tracing and investigating. This is on an '82 308 Image Unavailable, Please Login
Like Brian said, it's not OEM, probably wire for some alarm or stereo setup. Where does it originate? Alden
what it looks like to me is wiring used to lower the RF interference the center wire which carries current, and the outer wire is connected to ground to stop magnetic pulses from interfering with the signal on the center wire basically it's a shielded wire most commonly used on sound systems and computers.
Thanks guys. It was originally hooked into some power leads on the old radio. I'll trace where it's going under the foot plate and see if I can disconnect it wherever it runs to.
If you find four similar leads, my money would be on homemade speaker wire….which would be crazy because that looks like coax cable to me; especially if that’s a foil shield surrounding the white foam core insulator peeking out from under the top wire’s red insulation. I’ve read articles about building speaker wire from coax cables for exotic home hi-fI systems, but the benefits always sounded too much like vaporware to me….even more so in a car audio installation. - Dave
Were you able to determine this wire’s purpose/source? I just found a strange wire running through my center console as well. - Dave
