This rumor has been going on for years, I remember my Geology teachers affirming it. California will suffer a massive 30+minute long earthquake and subsequently fall or dissolve into the ocean, Nevada will be beach front property, Anyone have a expert opinion?
My expert opinion is that your geology teacher should share whatever it is he was smoking. Ain't gonna happen! DL
it is scientifically possible but extremely improbable. a 30 minute long earthquake would do more damage than just causing cali to fall off into the ocean. Tidal waves, the tremor would be felt extremely far away probably to great magnitudes. If a 30 minute long quake happens anywhere, we had all prolly better be worried.
It was probably left over substances floating around in his system from the 60s, he looked like a ex hippie. Meanwhile I am buying up property in Primm/Stateline for my new beach front Condo, I can hardly wait.
I agree with your teacher. Just mark my words, something like this will happen...................... in the next 5 million years. (give or take 4,999,999 years)
I remember watching a documentary about earthquakes though that was talking about Seattle - downtown Seattle is built on reclaimed land, but over rather soft earth that is resting on jagged moutains (hence the great depth of Lake Washington and Puget Sound). Anyway, they were saying that a "big one" will cause the soil of the downtown area to slide off these peaks/shelves and into the Sound. As for CA falling off and NV becoming beachfront, I think this is a marketing gimmick for NV real estate sales.
Yeah this is not going to happen - the general progression of the plates is for socal to slide up towards norcal with LA and SF being neighbors in about 15 million years. Earthquakes don't really move any particular plate more than a few feet at a time, so even if california did break away, it would do it at an extremely slow rate.
The Earths crust is anywhere from 5-15 kms thick {depending on where you are.} I have a better chance of shy diving up, then CA "falling into the ocean". "Day after tommorow" fan?
OK, people, lets get some facts straight here. Whoever did these calculations suggesting that california will fall into the ocean obviously did not know what they were doing. If you look closely at the calculations, you will see that one of their signs is wrong (it is +, when it should be -). When all calculations are computed properly, it is obvious that it is not California that will fall into the ocean, but the rest of the continent. As usual, california rules, so the rest of you schmucks better go out and buy some scuba gear. Dom
It makes me mad when people can't even do simple math. Good job finding the mistake with the sign. BUT. The rest of the country isn't going to fall in the ocean. My god people can't you see it! California is going to fall up!
TOP CALIFORNIA NATURAL DISASTERS * Earthquake will cause California will fall in the ocean * Lassen will reactivate * Shasta will reactivate, creating a chain activating them all! * "Global Warming" will defrost the poles, rinsing California * Massive tidal wave from Japan will overpower the Continental Shelf and rinse California out to sea * (1960's) Ice Age will freeze over North America, including California * Alignment of planets will tip the world over, California - screwed! * California will urban sprawl itself out of the farm industry creating a food shortage, then the earthquake will hit. * Object from space will smack California first so.. which is it ?
Did you all know all the biggest earthquakes that human ever recorded happened in the Midwest or somewhere else beside CA? On the average, CA have a major earthquake ( 6.0 or higher) every 10 years. I think we pass due for one. The BIG one, if it happens I'll be long gone on this earth. On the earth time scale, we exist a bleep, less than a nano-second, on this blue planet. Why worry?
Silly people...only the RENT CONTROLLED parts of California will fall into the ocean. Then they'll be struck by asteroids, and buried by lava flows, and rinsed by a giant tsunami. The net effect will not be that much different from years of abuse by Section 8 tenants
