Incredible that they 'lose'/sacrifice the core with it's 4 engines https://www.space.com/artemis-1-space-shuttle-hardware "Unlike their use on the shuttle, the Artemis 1 RS-25 engines will not be recovered for reuse. The core stage's size, as well as its altitude and speed at engine cutoff, made recovery impractical without making a significant sacrifice in cargo-carrying capability. The core stage will break apart on reentry and drop any surviving parts into the Pacific Ocean." .
Not to be a complainer but I really don't understand what they are thinking at NASA. $4.1 Billion per launch is just ridiculous. As a benchmark, each Saturn 5 cost $185 Million. In today's dollars that would be $1.16 Billion per launch. The Saturn 5 was a war house when it came to putting stuff in orbit and getting to the moon and back. This is why people have lost confidence in NASA and considers them to be not relevant when the "best" they can do is send an unmanned rocket to the moon with dummies on board and bring it back for $4 Billion dollars. Hard to imagine we did that with live humans in 1969 over 53 years ago AND they landed AND walked on the Moon.
People are well aware. According to a US Auditor, Each Launch of the Space Launch System Will Cost an “Unsustainable” $4.1 Billion https://www.universetoday.com/154957/according-to-a-us-auditor-each-launch-of-the-space-launch-system-will-cost-an-unsustainable-4-1-billion/ The NASA Artemis program will continue until SpaceX Starship is well established. Human rating Starship could be 10(?) years away. AND it has to be refueled in orbit! NASA needs SpaceX and SpaceX needs NASA. Costs of establishing a moon base are just $,000,000,000 .
2nd attempt - Sat, Sept. 3 launch with a 2 hr window opening at 2:17 p.m. EDT (18:17 UTC). Live coverage begins at 12:15 p.m. https://www.facebook.com/NASA .
I can just hear Nelson in a private meeting: Screw it! Let's call SpaceX. The Senate Launch System needs a nice and fiery RUD to end this nightmare.
SpaceX has sent sent astronauts to the ISS SEVEN times aboard Crew Dragon. First manned mission 2 yrs ago. Flight #8 this Oct. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_Dragon_2 Boeing's Starliner FIRST crewed test flight to the ISS is scheduled for Feb '23 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Starliner who you gonna call? .
The scale on the Starship in that picture is way off. The diameter of it is about the same as the core stage of the SLS. In that graph its close to double.
