I'll preface this by acknowledging that this is a very subjective question. Our track situation in Colorado sucks for the moment and probably at least the season. I've got the itch to get some track time in and I'm looking at a NASA event that is at TWS in Mid-April. I've done NASA events around the country and each region has it's own flavor. What's the opinion on the NASA group that shows up in North Texas? Fun oriented? Up tight rule mongers? Good mix of cars? In short, do a many of the FChat folks support NASA events? Thanks.

There are quite a few of us who run with NASA - TX, I can quickly think of 4 F-chatters in the DFW area alone. It's a very fun group to run with and more laid back than some other organizations (or so I have been told). Race days run very smoothly and hold to a pretty tight schedule, which is a good. There is a very diverse group of cars and a very friendly classification system that allows almost anything to run, provided you have the right safety equipment.

I'm sure the personalities differ by class, but in GTS where I run I can also say the racing is very clean. On track contact is rare, as are boneheaded or overly aggressive drivers.

I'll be at the TWS race in April. Also note that there is a 4 hr enduro that Saturday, so I expect a lot of folks from other organizations to show up. What car would you bring, maybe we can help find the proper class for you?

Texas World Speedway in College Station?

    That's not North Texas, brudda!

I enjoyed the Texas Mile event with them, it was nice......

Just checked the calendar that IS in College Station, much closer to Houston than Dallas, let me know if you need anything and I'll Hot Shot it out there........

My mistake on the North Texas remark. I was thinking of my time in North Texas when I was typing I guess.

Thanks for the comments and feedback. I'm not sure what car I would bring. Either the 430 if there will be some FCars there or a 996tt. Probably the P. It would just be fun to get out on a real track with a good group.

I meet the couple that runs NASA TX at an event in Houston a while back. Seemed like very nice people. I think they were both racing Spec Miata IIRC. Thanks again.

TWS is lightly used at times and all but destroyed as to original infrastructure (Grandstands & Pressbox) but the Infield Facilities are still great and it's cool in a "ghostown vibe" kindof way....:D

Just a caution as to what to expect Track Surface wise, although I have not run on it personally in my cars.

    There are several configurations.

Back in The Day, it was a faster track than Indy, when the speedway cars tested on the complete high banking. And seeing Max Papis wring out the then new 333SP only a chain link fence away down the Main Straight is one of my earliest Ferrari racing memories! I'll try to find a 'Vintage Paul Frame' poster for ya! LOL!

I'm just trying to tell you to 'pack your lunch' as you come thru town!

Give me a 'heads up' next time you are down!

TWS is about a 3 hour tow for the DFW crowd and is a very popular venue for both DE and club racing. In addition to NASA who goes there 2x/year I believe three different regions of the PCA hold events there as well the Driver's Edge and others.

In April we will run the 2.9 mile circuit CCW and in August we return to run it CW. We use the front straight of the oval and the rest of the course is run in the infield. For many TWS is their favorite track in the area, though I am still partial to MSR-Cresson. The track is relatively safe except turns 1/2 and turn 7 which can get you into some trouble. The track surface and infield are in great shape for club racing, no better or worse than competing venues. The on-site food options are better than most and the surrounding town is full of Texas A&M coeds which makes for nice scenery at dinner time. Hotels are a drawback as it can sometimes be tough to find a nicer place to stay.

Jake and I are on the same page with this one. I have about 20,000 miles instructing and most all of it (like 99.5%) is at TWS and I have about 10,000 track driving miles and again 99.5% is there. It is a GREAT facility with gas on hand, usually parts and tire changing on site too (at least for PCA DE's and club races). I have never done a NASA event, but I have done PCA, John Eagle Honda, FCA, and The Drivers Edge (and maybe a few others too...) and I can say that PCA is BY FAR the most structured group and the instructors are quite good. These days probably 1/2 of them or more are active or retired PCA Club Racers, so the experience is really there. Plenty of places to stay (as long as there are no big A&M games in town), great "scenery" as Jake discussed earlier, good food both on track and off, great crowd of track junkies at TWS!

I have not driven the updated MSR-C so I can't comment on that, but I have been off in several locations at TWS with no issues. The big issue for turn 1-2 has been removed so that turn should be fine now, but turn 7 can still mess your car up a bit...I have seen some bad stuff out there. The rest of the track has GREAT run offs that are smooth and no problems.

Get on down to Texas and enjoy the hospitality and the tracks! We have some good ones in the state now... MSR-C, MSR-H, TWS, TMS, H2R, The Driveway...Eagles Canyon (or whatever it is called way up north nearly to OK)...

I can almost smell hot brakes just thinking about 20K miles on the track. That is a crazy amount of time.

For the NASA event, I would probably run HPDE group 3 in the 996tt. It's a bit of a garage queen. I've got a log book with NASA and have TT'd with them a fair amount so that's usually an easy group for me to step into regardless of location. I've had about 80% good experiences in PCA and 20% was less than fun. That's why I'm sending out a "ping". It's a long way to go if you end up with the wrong group.

Based on this thread I'm going to try and make it happen. I lived in Dallas for 8 years and agree with your comments about Texas hospitality. Even better, my uncle is a minister at a very large church in College Station and he's one of the coolest people I know. Thanks again.

I will be there in the 355 Challenge. 3 hours closer to you I would consider in DFW area the MSR Cresson and Eagle's Canyon events.

There's a cool Bed & Breakfast in Chappel Hill called the Browning Plantation, a historical home there...it's a nice place to wind down after hearing car engines all day!
