WOW !!!!! This is awesome, Looks like they found a fluctuating methane signature near a cave opening. NASA plans on sending a larger more powerful rover then. They will probably have to drill to find the microbes, or maybe they'll be giant Martian Vampire bats that fly out at night :)
Maybe its a pre invasion colony from the planet of naughty stewardesses

There's a highly evolved species somewhere out there, that's laughing at us and our "microbial" findings... At this rate, i'll be long gone before discovery of intelligent life in space is made public knowledge...

Marvin the Martian and fluctuating methane? Tell those scientists to save their money, Marvin's been eating chili again.

    I'm still chuckling to myself..

Not at you William, I always enjoy your science posts too! You find good topics!

.... what I find hillarious, is that out of all the things scientists have found with their precise instruments and technology is methane gas. Not a single-celled or multi-celled organism, footprint or structure, not even a UFO recycle yard, but methane gas, the output of organisms. It would be the same as here on earth, finding 'crop circles' near the county waste treatment facillity. :D

But in all seriousness, if Mars works out as good real estate, and Nasa gets impulse propulsion down, we could be looking at a new frontier.

And get that Tonka toy out of my rock garden! (That makes me verrry angry (huff huff).)

A government agency looking for fungus doesn't need to go all the way to Mars, eh?

NASA (No Active Systems Aloft) is still asking the wrong question: It isn't "Is there life on mars?" -- it's "Will there be?"

Or: "Will there be good night life on mars?" :D

OKay, who wants to bet that this "new rover" will either break when it hits the surface, or just flat out won't make it to Mars. Honestly, this stuff interests me but I could really care less if there's life there. How about we spend some of this billions on things that matter on our own planet?

Considering that we have THREE successful rover landings, I'm willing to give NASA the benefit of the doubt. The euros are the ones who didn't make it last time.

Should we spend on our own planet and forget the future? We might be 2-300 years away from a huge discovery (civilized life in another solar system) but these baby-steps are needed to get there. I'm actually thrilled that they are finally going with nuclear power this time around.

You guys need to listen to Richard C. Hoagland and check out his website more often. He's more unofficially known as the "face on Mars guy" who analyzes every bit of image data that NASA releases. (and tries to ferret out those images that they do not release.) www.enterprisemission.com

And check out the photos of Saturn's moon:http://www.enterprisemission.com/moon2.htm Does it REALLY look like a natural moon, or an ancient planetoid of artificial manufacture. Check out the giant WALL/mountain that runs around the entire planet.

If you read Richard's website with an open mind, or have been following him for a long time, you will know that he is a constant thorn in NASA's side, but they will NEVER debate him openly on anything that he says. They know that he's right, and are slowly trying to "drift" their information toward the general public about current and past life on Mars and elsewhere.

Where do you suppose we are going to get all the natural resources to feed & shelter 7 or 10 or 15 billion humans ?

That's not so far fetched... Some scientists speculate that our DNA is SO advanced and so complex that there's the possibility it couldn't have developed in "only" the few hundred billion years the earth has been around and, subsequently, it began life elsewhere and found its way to earth sometime after the earth was formed... Additionally, we ARE on the EDGE of a galaxy; if we were able to evolve way out here on our lonesome, imagine what could be happening deep in the "downtown" of the galaxy... Pretty cool stuff when you imagine the possibilities...

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Evolutionary model has the earth at around 4.6 Billion years, not hundreds of Billions. But you're right otherwise. Panspermia is widely considered for just the reason you laid out, there's not enough time, even given Billions of years for DNA to arise by chance, which again is why I don't believe in Evolution.:)

When I was doing my Masters in Buddhist philosophy I really enjoyed finding how Buddhism & quantum physics dovetailed so nicely on many points. Of course Buddhism had a 2400 year head start over the scientists so its a lot more advanced in certain places. For one in Buddhism things in the Universe dont happen by chance, they happen by desire. We believe that the Universe itself is a living super being and that beings such as us that live on planets arise because we have such a strong desire to experience physical experiences. So there was no chance involved Life itself sprang from this irrestistable desire to experience the physical realm

Arrgh. The replacement of science with mystery religions: A sign of the decline of the Roman Empire, circa 350 A.D.

Find a story called "The Cold Equations". You'll hate it.

Then read Heinlein's WorldCon keynote speach that discussed it. (Published in "Requiem").
