I am almost certain I also watched the race you are referring too. Kenny was a lot more democratic than Jeff was, I think Jeff actually became personally offended, which imho was more than a tad hypocritical, knowing perfectly well it happens in NASCAR.

Any way I really wanted to hear what Bernie had to say unless it was just a case of Roberts being a 'smart ass' and messing with Hammond.

JJ's team knows they can make the chase without wins - they also know the winning car get's it benchmarks published for the teams to look at. They've treated the regular season as a "practice" session, taking time to adjust and try setups on the car, bringing it to pit road an aweful lot should cautions allow. It pays off that they have a huge data set when the chase starts.

What could really get interesting - is to give your chasers a different tire compound for the chase, with no prior-testing aside from the race weekend.

Personally - I'd only back out of a win if I thought my teammate had worse chances of beating me in the chase than whoever he'd replace.

NASCAR goofed bigtime by pulling penalties out of thin air for cars diving into the pits, when it'd been going on for years at Richmond and other final pre-chase races every year already. They should of either penalized Bowyer for intentional race manipulation, or left it alone. Some are a little smarter about diving into the pits to let teammates by "We need a splash of fuel to make it to the end, we miscalculated, bring it down pit road". "We need to check your lugnuts are all tight." etc...

Even if you pass a win to a teammate, your teammate has to beat all the other cars on the track. This is why NASCAR changed the format. However, I haven't looked at the points standings/results all year, and am not following the season at all. I just watch the races.

    Andrew,

just to be clear, you know I was referring to last year regarding jj's sand bagging after he locked up his spot.

that's why they keep winning it :)

once they're locked in, they focus on their testing program for the chase races and the remaining "regular season" races are an afterthought.

don't hate the player, hate the game ;)

I by nature, root for the underdogs, but the #48 is an exception for me. They do great work.

Also however, the tighter the tolerances you aim for in machining - the more time it takes. Once locked in, run engines with easier to build heavier parts that are more reliable, saving the super fine work and engine parts for either the chase, or getting a teammate into the chase. The driver may not be "sandbagging", but the team is using heavier/slower/more reliable equipment to build resources elseware. In JJ's case though, they are bringing it in for changes and data gathering. With lucky dog's and wave arounds, they can get near the front at the end despite extra pit stops, so why not?

The last restart from Brad's onboard cam was pretty crazy, I don't know what brought the caution out, but here they come to green, if I had a seatbelt at my desk I'd buckle it right now. :p

I assume the same for all the equipment...chassis/engine/trans/etc for "regular season" races after being locked in are second rate-save the good stuff for the chase, or as you say another team in your organization trying to get in.

wonder how the chase would have looked in the early 90's, with more independent teams, fewer multi-team juggernauts, etc.

Stupid NASCAR!! Kurt Busch brushes the wall with ten laps to go, with no one else involved and no debris on track and he makes it back to the pits, but the NASCAR idiot's keep the safety car out for an additional six ridiculous laps. NASCAR imo is damn lucky that Dale Jr. won or there would be hell to pay.

Incompetence in racing these days is a plague that has a viable antidote, competence, yet nobody wants to administer said antidote.

So, the race's title was the gobowling.com 400?

Talk about a non-automotive related sponsor.

    hey, the check cleared.

even more amazing was Junior's primary sponsor wasn't the Natl Guard, or Mountain Dew, or one of the dozen other normal sponsors for the 88; it was Michael Baker Int'l, a government contractor based in Pittsburgh. when top teams in NASCAR need to start selling one off regional sponsorships...

Yeah, can't believe I'm the only one that connected those dots.

I can see it now, "The Dude" driving the pace car, slinging his white Russian around and when
they tell him he needs to slow down he replies "Yeah, well, that is just, like, your opinion man".
