ESPN is hyping a NASCAR press conference at 7 PM ET / 6 PM CT tonight.

"Rumors" are a completely revamped points system and drivers won't be able to compete for the title across divisions, i.e. Sprint drivers stealing the thunder of the Nationwide guys.

This is more exciting than the State of the Union address! :D

hey, since the Chase sucks anyway, I got a great idea! let's make it more complicated and contrived!

    :(

and the new points system, while more obvious, doesn't solve the problem with the old one: not enough incentive to win (or for that matter, take a chance at advancing any position at the end of a race).

    :(:(

sorry NASCAR, y'all done jumped a shark or two.

    :(:(:(

I have always thought that the NASCAR drivers should not be competeing in the Nationwide series, it's for new upcoming drivers and those who could not get a NASCAR seat. Great news imho.

I agree this should open up the field a bit but the big dogs aren't banned from Nationwide or Trucks, they just can't compete for the title. Thus, the Sprint guys doing it

    a) for fun
    b) for more seat time at a specific track
    c) because of sponsorship deals

will still do it, which I bet pretty much all of them fall into one of the above. We'll see less of the back-and-forth b/w tracks on the same weekend but I'll be surprised if there is much of an impact.

I wonder how much of the "double" (or triple) duty was sponsor driven (pardon the pun). Might take awhile for some of those deals to run their course (slight pun) before the Sprint guys/teams can bail on Nationwide and/or Truck.

DW pointed out that the maximum a driver can win per race is 48 pts! Coincidence or conspiracy?

Last weekend Rick Hendrick's 360 goes for an insane amount at B-J and now this!

Wakeup Oliver Stone and feed Michael Moore...we need to expose NASCAR! :D

While I have never agreed with the top dogs in ANY series taking championship's from lower classes I am cool with occasional interlude's .It does help the up & comer's a chance to learn from the more accomplished and gives fan's an increased reason to be there , there should NEVER be point's for a higher accomplished /established driver to take cash & championships away from the up & commer's. Way back until the mid 70's this was common even for F1 & Indy guys to also compete in F2/3 , CanAm , F5000 as well as other event's. Then again that was far before huge sponsorship money and meaningful championship payout's.

I agree, but they will let the Cup drivers race in Nationwide and Trucks because it brings in the fans... Hopefully they make it so those drivers are not awarded any points in the lower series...

Unlike F1 which seems to think it needs to change points system & rules every single year.....

    Touché...

But, at least F-1's points system is understandable.

On the other hand, NASCAR's points system which should
be nearly as straight forward as F-1's has been so convoluted
that not even NASCAR media members, or anyone else for
that matter have ever been able to explain it.

As Brian France said in the press conference, "Many of our
most loyal fans don't fully understand the points system we
    have used to date".

A lot of us likely don't know what a 43 to 1 scale is either
but, oh well, the likelyhood of anything really changing
    is remote at best.
