I like Aspen, how far out do you have to go to set a double wide?
It seems to me that if anyone here is being "boorish", it's you. And looking through the various responses, it looks like the majority of others besides Phil found it funny (as did I).
Look up the word boorish in the dictionary. boor·ish —describe persons, acts, manners, or mannerisms that violate in some way the generally accepted canons of polite, considerate behavior. Boorish, originally referring to behavior characteristic of an unlettered rustic or peasant, now implies a coarse and blatant lack of sensitivity to the feelings or values of others I don't think it is funny to label NASCAR fans as "welfare recipients or welfare recipient wannabes". I find it offensive and insulting, even if meant in jest. Substitute the word "African-American" for NASCAR fan and see how funny most people find it.
There is a small trailer park about 3 blocks from where I live. We live 3 blocks north of the Jerome Hotel which is downtown. Never seen one come on the market. They are sold before they are publically put up for sale. If they are employee housing (price controlled) the cheapest thing in town is about $150k. If they are free market you are talking $400k to $1 million without a garage. With a garage you are talking at least $150k more. Just the free markets have garages. My wife is a realtor if we can be or service...
snob (snŏb) Pronunciation Key n. 1. One who tends to patronize, rebuff, or ignore people regarded as social inferiors and imitate, admire, or seek association with people regarded as social superiors. 2. One who affects an offensive air of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect. Look at me I can find dictionary quotes too Get off your high horse, you're right I don't own a Ferrari, I'm 20 years old the best I can hope for is owning one in the future. Am I not up to your standards to post here because I don't own an F-car? Am I not allowed to be a Ferrari F1 fan or enthusiast? I really don't see how you can preach of dispelling the stereotypes of Ferrari owners when you're living up to the majority of them in just a few posts on this thread. The majority of the people I've met on F-chat have been very inviting and not in the least bit pretentious. It's called a sense of humor you should try finding one. When Nascar fans start marching on washington then you can compare them to african americans. (whoops in an attempt to make a joke I might have offended you, how boorish of me)
You should go back and see Rusty's flip back in the mid-to-late 90's down the back straight. I believe he flipped a total of 21 times at top speed. As for F1, an interesting question. Do you think that going towards a more "global" schedule will hurt them in the European market, taking away European races to put them towards other tracks around the world?
Watched the first hour and the last 15 laps. Went skiing and exercised the 360 in between. I taped the race, but not much sense in watching when I know the ending. What a great show. Really enjoyed it.
That will hurt them to some degree, but since the sport originates mostly out of Europe/UK they will always have their core group of fans and support. The anti F1 sentiments in Europe are unrelated to the locations of the races (actually might help if less races are in Europe going forward). They are the usual intellectuals'/elitists'/environmentalists'/socialists' comments, concerns and arguments against motorsports in general and F1 as its most prominent and lucrative derivation in particular.
1) Get off my high horse? Are you serious?!? Have you read any of Phil's posts? I am not the one making an issue of Ferrari ownership, Phil is. I found his snipe at me for not listing Ferrari ownership as offensive as you did. You are talking to the wrong person. He has made that barbed comment to several people on this discussion board who do not list Ferrari ownership in their profile. If you are going to accuse someone of snobbish behavior, get the facts first and make sure you are talking to the right person. 2) What exactly were you thinking when you posted that ridiculous picture under the subtitle "Owned"? Do you think that added anything to the discussion? If you have an issue, discuss it. If all you have to add is cartoonish insults that add nothing to the discussion and force me into an argumentative and defensive position, then you would be better served to hold your tongue. All you are going to provoke is a sharp retort from your intended target (which in this case you did) and you will resolve nothing. 3) Calling NASCAR fans welfare recipient wannabes is not only snobbish and elitist, it is insulting and reinforces stereotypes. Perhaps at 20 years of age you have not yet learned how to be respectful of other people, hopefully in the future you will. Stereotypes are created by posting offensive comments like this on one website and have them re-printed elsewhere on NASCAR discussion forums under the heading: "Look at what these arseholes call us". You might think his barb was funny (sad if you do) but rest assured that those people he denigrated sure won't find it amusing in the least. It is one thing to have a sense of humor (I actually like the Waltrip joke at the top of this page) but I find nothing funny about reinforcing stereotypes and denigrating other people. You called me out because you thought I was insulting you over the Ferrari ownership issue yet you want to defend someone who called NASCAR fans welfare recipients? Do you not see the flaw in your logic here? It is OK to slander others but not OK to be slandered in turn? Since you are so adept with dictionaries, go look up "cognitive dissonance". You shouldn't be arguing with me, you should be arguing with Phil. I agree with every point you have made and that is why I was calling out Phil on these points. I fail to understand what your grievance is with me when it is Phil who is exhibiting all of these issues you seem to have. You need to lighten up and read more before you jump into other people's discussions.
Well one has to admit usually ex f1 drvers go to nascar and not viceversa. I mean such is the case with Montoya (http://freshf1.wordpress.com/2007/02/19/montoya-frustrated-daytona-500/ ) or - roumors say - with Villeneuve ( http://www.topix.net/content/cp/2332194043361863098940298304821598111670 ). So at least at first sight NASCAR seems a refuge. Isn't it ?
JPM is the first F1 driver to go to NASCAR, as far as I know. Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti both drove in NASCAR before they went to F1. Several drivers have gone from CART to F1. Does this make F1 a refuge? Of course not. I think both series are the highest form of their respective racing disciplines. Saying that one form is a refuge simply because drivers cross over from the other form is not a particularly accurate description. Refuge is probably more accurately applied to series like Champ cars or DTM, with all due respect to drivers in both series.
http://members.aol.com/winstongal/joke.htm CAUTION: Some of these jokes are tasteless and obviously out of date. No, I am not the only one that tells NASCAR jokes. Google on "NASCAR Jokes" and you will find too many to read without having your eyeballs fall out. As the "originator" of this thread I repeat the intent was to be humorous. Not everything is funny to everybody. Intent is not and was not to offend but to have a laugh at ourselves as race fans and car nuts. I am a Jeff Gordon fan even though he acts like a jerk sometimes. He is and we are human. Suggestion: Laugh at the stuff you like and throw out the stuff you don't. One joke I found that I can't seem to find on the net again is: Where do you find thousands of redneck jokes? At any NASCAR race. And I still like the one I found- Why do NASCAR fans do it doggie style? So they can both watch the race. Have a great day. Enjoy watching NASCAR or whatever. Being able to laugh at ourselves is healthy. I remember the time we were at a party and a friend pulled up in his red Porsch 911 turbo. Beautiful car. The guy is a track driving instructor for the Porsche Club and has about a dozen great cars. His tires looked pretty bad and I told him he might want to get them checked. He said, Phil, those tires are shaved like that on purpose for the track. Haha. He reminds me everytime he sees me that he doesn't need new tires. Is that funny? Well how about the time we were taking the M3 to the track for the day with the BMW club. I was real excited and didn't want to be late for the drivers' meeting. Got in the car, turned the key but the car wouldn't start. Made double sure the car was in neutral with hand brake on. Checked the battery, fine. Checked the fuses, fine. I was panicked and called a friend in the club. First thing he told me was, "Well did you put in the clutch dummy??"My wife said, "I could have told you that." haha. You get the idea. I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box. Now, go take on the day.
I did a Google search on NASCAR + "welfare recipient wannabe" and the only thing that came up was your post. I can only assume that this "joke" was the product of your imagination and did not originate elsewhere. I have no real objection to any of the other jokes you wrote in your original post. I actually enjoyed a few, especially the Michael Waltrip joke which I will admittedly plagiarize at some point in the future. My point is that your characterization of NASCAR fans as welfare recipients or welfare recipient wannabes is not in the least bit funny. You claim your intent was not to offend anybody but I fail to see how anyone who even remotely considers themselves a fan of that sport would not be highly offended by your comments nor can I see how anyone who considers themselves the least bit intelligent would not see how offensive a characterization like that can be. You embarrass yourself with a "joke" like that but more importantly, you embarrass the rest of us. Why don't you take these lame NASCAR jokes and the rest of your "humor" over to a site better suited for them. I want to talk about F1 and racing in general and so do the rest of us.
If you want to be the martyr of nascar fans by my gust, you're now just starting to blow hott air for the sole purpose of arguing with me. I'm gonna go back to double wide and watch some speed tv.
The welfare bit is too outrageous for anyone with common sense to take seriously. I think thou dost protest too much. Much ado about nothing. And that is the response you deserve. Nothing. Since I started the thread, it is you who should go elsewhere since you can't seem to read the first paragraph of the first post in the thread that says it is just kidding. Glad you thought some of it was funny. There is hope...
Switch the word NASCAR fan to "negro" or "spick" and add the same preface that you are just kidding. See how funny people find you. Just because you say you are just kidding does not make that statement any less offensive. I suggest you post your same point on a NASCAR website, with the same disclaimer, and see if they also see your comments as being too outrageous. They will, but for reasons different than you suspect. There is humor that is funny and there is humor that is in bad taste. I think you crossed the line with that joke. I am puzzled that you fail to see that simple point. Judging by your response, I have my suspicions why. Your sense of humor seems to be at the level of the obnoxious drunk with a lampshade over his head, you find yourself funny but most people shake their head at you with mild embarrassment. I suspect you have very few friends.
You are blowing this joke way out of proportion. Anybody with common sense knows this is not the situation of the majority of nascar fans. However these jokes have been around for quite a while. Maybe not the exact wording of Phil's joke but pretty close to the same. There are several people here that have enjoyed this thread. If it is not to your taste then by all means move on to the next there are plenty of other threads here why dwell on one that you seem to dislike so much. Right now you are the one I can see not bringing anything constructive here maybe it is you that should find another forum.
OMG you can't be serious. If you substitute words in many phrases in could make them much more offensive. So now that his sense of humor is not on par with yours he an obnoxious drunk. Quite frankly I find your attitude toward this to be more obnoxious than anything he has done.
Yes, perhaps I have. I wrote one post criticizing an ill-advised joke and have then spent the rest of this thread writing several responses defending myself. I wanted to move on after I made the first post. I was expecting Phil to have the decency and common sense to edit his post so we could drop the discussion. Instead I have my Ferrari ownership questioned by this elitist prick, receive nothing but limp-wristed sarcasm instead of a coherent response and I have a 20 year old who can't read posting insults. I should have taken the time to read a few more of Phil's posts before I joined this discussion; had I recognized how moronicly insipid his brand of humor is and how little he has to add to any discussion, I would have not wasted my time. In this regard, I am at fault. We have wasted more than enough bandwidth on this idiotic issue. I am getting back to discussing racing and the upcoming F1 season. Phil and 1_can-dream, welcome to my ignore list.
The only elitist prick I can see in this thread would be yourself, and I hope even you can see the hypocracy in the second bolded portion of your comment. And I think you for the ignore list, maybe you should just ignore everyone on F-chat just in case they something you disagree with, or don't find humerous...oh wait that could also be accomplished by you finding another forum to act high and mighty on.
Is your ignore button broken? What exactly am I supposed to learn, how to put up with 'holier than thou' pricks?
