I never understood the hate for the tandem draft from fans, what was done to break the tandem draft makes for far more boring racing. I do always get a laugh when people post pics of NASCAR's worst looking people against paid models at a F1 track.
I think there are better tracks but not enough money to do the deal... Watkins glen would be awsome as an F-1 track but the cost for infrastructure and location not so much... the only tracks that i can think of that would have a shot is Road Atlanta & Laguna Seca ... they are with in chopper distance of major metro areas.... but Austin is impressive as a facility so if you could pick up the track and plop it anywhere it would have to be in either Cali - LA la land or NYC metro area= Hudson Valley or North NJ.... other wise leave it alone In Austin this was more about Hispanic / Mexican fans more than US fans. I would venture a guess that 60% of the people in attendance spoke Spanish not english.. if they get a race in Mexico - Austin beware... otherwise they will do fine. I think if F-1 is going to keep to a spec series - they need about 20 - 25 races... no need to have winter down time go from Feb to Nov. Dec & Jan off. Its always summer somewhere!
The point though, is for F1 to grow in the US it has to attract the people who currently are not fans and not in the stands. Placing your single race in the States on the same weekend as a huge racing event mere miles north is just bad business.
Actually F1 would've suffered more if it stayed at its normal weekend. With this years rules for "the chase" it's going to make Miami a really hot ticket. I agree though, I'd rather see the US earlier in the year. Maybe before Canada?
It might seem that way but there is so little crossover, and always will be, that it doesn't matter. I enjoyed Austin more than the crappy 2013 F1 race.
