I get sick of it, the Superbowl, Daytona, one big corporate commercial! It's like the old hockey joke, went to a fight and a hockey match broke out. I feel like I watched a commerical and a NASCAR RACE, NO, THE GREAT AMERICAN RACE broke out. Thank God for F1.

While I enjoy going to F1 races and appreciate the high tech that F1 is, as a spectator NASCAR is so much more entertaining. As far as NASCAR being commercial, what do you think all those stickers/product names on F1 cars, F1 driver helmets ,signs around the track and advertisements during the TV coverage are?

LOL, well, you can't blame marketers for plugging their crap, where it just so happens many people are tuned.

Too bad there isn't a CSPAN equivalent for NASCAR racing. :D

It's funny most people wouldn't even know of the drivers if they weren't wearing driving suits & showing off their stock cars.

I used to be a Nascar fan back in the 1990's but ever since Earnhardt Died I really don't care. I usually help my old college teacher - Joe Buford race in the Busch Series at Bristol TN but this year I have some other plans for that weekend.
I am a BIG WRC fan and I usually watch Formula F1 now. Watching the WRC cars going through the woods at 160 mph on a bumpy dirt road barely missing the trees on both sides. Going airborne at 120mph and then slamming on the brakes to make a 145 degree turn and not missing a beat. WOO HOO what a rush !!

I can't believe you people that think NASCAR is crap. NASCAR is extremely fun to watch, unlike F1. Though I love Ferrari, F1 bores me to death. There is no intensity to it. NASCAR is extremely intense, with cars rubbing against one another, getting three wide, and even ramming each other for the lead. I often find myself jumping up and cheering at the TV.

As far as marketing, get used to it. At least during NASCAR, there are car commercials. Every driver in F1 has a sponsor too, in case you didn't notice. If you don't like advertising, stop watching TV.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. Leave it for those of us who do. We won't miss you, and we don't care what you think.

    Simple, really.

[sarcasm] yeah nascar's cool. driving around in circles for 100 laps at 185mph is sooo exciting! [/sarcasm]

seriously I tried watching it today and I couldn't handle it. there were like 20 cars all in a group right next to eachother going around in circles for like 5 minutes and i couldn't take it anymore!

and if one of you NASCAR fans is going to be like "oooo driving around in circles at 185 mph is harder than you think!" well for what its worth i see more crashes in NASCAR than in F1 (who do 185mph in zig-zags etc)! I think the NASCAR drivers must be DUI all the time.

[postwhore]gosh and one more thing, i read in Road and Track that there are 800million viewers of F1 compared to the 7million viewers of NASCAR! Pretty crazy, considering most American's (i'm in N. America here) don't even know who Michael Schumacher is (pathetic huh?) [/postwhore]

Are you talking 800 million views in the world? And the 7 million in the US for NASCAR? It's not really pathetic. Formula One is a global series, without any link the the US expect a track in Indy. I love Formula One, but I can understand why Americans don't follow it. If we can get a competitive US driver in, I'm sure the ratings and follow would go up. NASCAR is a US-based series, with US drivers, and US brands. NASCAR has grassroots, with small tracks all over the country, with feeder touring series to the Nextel Cup.

Plus, we have a much more competitive sports landscape. In most countries, usually two sports get the coverage and "passion". Here, we got the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, NASCAR/ChampCar, College Sports, ect.

F1 = a $200 million parade lap. Except for the start, a F1 race is pretty boring with very little passing. If they could get those cars bunched up it would be a lot more fun to watch.

And, I'll never buy "X million people like it" arguement. Look, soccer has billions of fans, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

That being said, NASCAR is lame for its own reasons. Give me more SCCA stuff. Although the best race I ever saw was the CART race at the Mich 500. Talk about passing! It was great.

Nascar is great. Any other autosport where 40 guys race at 200mph 8 inches from the guy in front of you. Great stuff to watch!

I love NASCAR, the racing is great, and most of its' detractors dislike it because its boring watching cars go around in circles. I don't consider it raicng around in circles; it is like other forms of racing that have to deal with the ever changing conditions of the track, the weather, the car, tires, fuel, driving in traffic, etc. I think its great to watch any event that incorporates all those ever changing elements and yet after 500 miles (with, admittedly a few yellow flags) the top 10 cars finish within half a second. If you think NASCAR is all about advertising, the entire reason F1 isn't willing to lower downforce by getting rid of the front and rear wings is that such a move would cost the teams 50% of their advertising display area. If Bernie the Benevolent Dictator is so concerned about safety and speed, then he would put those concerns ahead of his commercial interests. I don't see it happening.

I'm in the minority here, since I'm a Formula One fan who also enjoys NASCAR. It's too bad they had the wreck with 3 to go. The racing at the end was pretty tense. NOW....what NASCAR needs to stop doing, IMO, is to quit parading out these ridiculous celebrities that have absolutely no connection to the sport or its fan base. Let's see...in the last couple years we've had Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Brian Wilson, Ben Affleck, Mariah Carey, Brittney Spears. I mean, unless Mariah and Brittney were going to do a pole dance on the infield, then they have no business being there. There was actually a quote in Autoweek regarding Ashton Kutcher's being named as the Grand Marshall. It was along the lines of what a big event the 500 is to have such a big celebrity as Mr. Kutcher. Spare me. He's a B-level actor maximizing his name with a recycled TV gimmick gag-show renamed as Punk'd. No sooner do they start interviewing Matthew Modine, who is actually a pretty cool Texas boy, then they begin plugging his upcoming movie and pointing out his being an F1 fan. At least they have the right guys doing the announcing.

I agree. But this is happening in all of our sports. The Super Bowl, the NBA and the All-Star game, ect...As for the announcers, I like DW and that, but they need to chill out. They keep screaming many times. Got annoying.

Actually, I like hearing DW and Larry McReynolds hooti' and hollering, They used to be in the thick of it all and know first hand how exiting it can be. I love it. But I really like Benny Parsons, he is so damn funny in real life.
