WooHoo!!! First shot too, nice WASHINGTON - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23265613
There's a message in there for any country that would like to try to send a Nuke missile towards us.... (read China, Iran or North Korea or anybody else stupid enough to take on our military) Don't even bother, cause we have the technology to shoot it down before it ever gets here.... I am confident that the message was duly noted by all who may have ever harbored the thought that they could attack us.
Ummmm.... yeah, provided they give us a few weeks warning... oh, and yeah, if they could let it orbit a few thousand times before it hits us that would be great too.
Also, we don't like to launch when the seas are over about 4 feet... On the other hand, maybe the delay had more to do with politics than it did with the rocket science - as the good Doctor once said - I just send them up, I don't know where they come down. It's not my department, I am Verner won Braun.
I bet China,Iran and Russia are paying lots of attention to this launch.!! Let the arms race Begin!!!
I can't help but wonder if it was all a ploy, the satellite wasn't busted in the first place. What a great way to show off our technology. I never doubted that we'd hit it first time. Can you imagine the pressure on the guy in charge of the missile? "You MUST hit this the first time!"
I thought it was going to miss the Satellite and hit Iran. Oh, may as well throw Venezuela in the mix. We all know how well it's going with that dictator.
What I though was interesting about it was they were worried that the tank of hydrazine would crash into the Earth intact and kill people. But wouldn't you think that during re-entry the tank would be at least opened enough to immediately empty while still a fireball 20 miles into the atmosphere? This thing had no heat shielding and would have likely incinerated. Even Columbia was just small pieces and except for the fatal damage it was designed for re-entry.
They have been using that fuel for the last 30 years, Its strange how all of a sudden it becomes such a deal. I remember several launches from VAFB where the rocket would stray in the wrong direction and they would detonate in the atmosphere and no one cared, then all of a sudden we need to spend 50million to stop this one. Maybe they were scared it might land some where, others could get the technology.
"Oh, uh, we have to get rid of the hydrazine that could be harmful." "We have men on alert for cleanup of the hydrazine should it fall to earth." Blah blah blah. It's all made up to distract the world.
