Digkey will not carry that part number.

It is a specialized microcontroller that seems to be frequently used in HVAC control in cars. The problem, most likely, is that it will need to be sold in bulk to OEM's for inclusioon in manufactured units. NEC is not likely to sell you anything less than a bulk quantity.

Do a search for the part number. I did and TONS of overstock suppliers carry them. USBid.com is one such that I have used in the past - only problem being they have a $500 minimum order. You should be able to find one who will have a much lower minimum than that, I'll bet.

The main problem you are going to have is that since its a microcontroller, unless it is pre-programmed from NEC, swapping it out is not going to do anything to solve your problem unless you can also get the software for it and have a programmer for it.

May I ask what caused you to believe this chip needs replaced? I am doubtful that a chip replacement will do it for a microcontroller since I can't imagine they would come pre-programmed, but I could be wrong!

I found the datasheet for the chip

    http://pdf.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/7115/NEC/UPD78CP14G-36.html

It has internal ROM, and it is designed to be user-programmed. It does not come pre-programmed, so if you buy one and install, it won't work. Furthermore I doubt that getting one from another vehicle will work either, unless the board it is used on is a standard part across multiple vehicles, which I highly doubt. Its a 64-pin DIP and it has a LOT of multi-purpose lines, so I really don't think it was used in a standard HVAC control.

Who made the electronics in the car? Bosch? Magenti Marelli? Delco? Your only shot would be to find a vehicle that used the exact same board, and then I would grab the board rather than just the chip, because its highly likely that from one revision to another, software changes would be made that may render two revisions incompatible.

Sorry I couldnt give you better news.
