A search of the old archives only revealed that the 308 heater valves are similar to a '70s Opel/GM part. Anyone have more info on this? There is no way I'm going to pay ~$150 for that thing. Many thanks.

Do you want one that works or that just doesn't leak and let (more) hot air bleed into the cabin? If it's the latter, just pull it out and plug the hoses.

I am assuming that $150 is for a used part. Is that correct?

I hate to suggest this, like you haven't already thought of them, but have you tried T. Rutlands?

    F-UK - $300

T Rutlands - out of stock, list price is $500 though!!!!

GT Car Parts - didn't call back, I'm not holding my breath on them though.

Dennis McCann- the bargain at $225.

Looks like I'll have to become the FChat 308 heater valve guy. Time to tear into my leaky valve...

I read a while back in R&T that it also was the same as a Ford Pickup. F-250 or something. I'll dig up the issue tonight or tomorrow for you.

    Hey Dr. T,

Good memory for trivia.........I happened to be reading that )November 1991 issue of Road and Track "Ferrari Special" last night!

According to the article the Heater Valve is the same as a Ford F-350 pickup...........doesn't specify what year/model though.........probably around the 1980's I'm guessing?

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,
    P

I can imagine the conversation at the Kragen Parts Counter.

Me, I need a heater valve
Parts Guy, what year, what make, what model
Me, Hm, a Ford truck circa 1980
Parts guy, what year, what make, what model
Me, the one that crosses to the same Ferrari 308
Parts guy, so what year Ferrari, what make, what model
Me, can you order one of each for all the the Ford trucks from 1980 to 1989. I will return the ones I don't need.
Parts guy, how bout you come back with the right year, right make and right model and I'll order that one for you.

Me, OK, I'll call GT car parts. Bill, got one of these jobbies?

At least at Kragen, they would know enough to ask for make, model and year. Around here, at most of the "big box" auto parts places, the guy or gal behind the counter would look at you with a blank stare and say:

"Heater valve?? What's a heater valve? I never heard of one of those before. Do you have a part number for that? The only heaters we have plug into the cigarette lighter. Is that what you're looking for? Did you look in the accessories isle, maybe you'll find it there."

Fortunately, there are a couple of "old time" auto parts places around here, and folks that speak "car parts." I have had a lot of luck with a local NAPA store. Pull the old valve out and take it down to a good old fashioned auto parts place, and see what they come up with. Some of the old catalogues actually have pictures in them and you might be able to match something up.

Otherwise, drop back five yards and punt, and call McCann and just order the thing. On the scale of Ferrari parts, $225 is pretty cheap for an OEM replacement part. You'll waste more time chasing your tail or trying to dissect the old one than it's worth.
