Im quite relaxed thanks. The problem with this kind of thing is sometimes I feel like Im banging my head against the wall when I tell someone they are not the same and someone else feels the exact opposite to be true. Its almost funny really since Ive had Momo GTO copy rims on my 308, a set of repop QV's, TRX's, 328 rims from ferrari UK and now factory QV's. I appointed myself the expert on wheels for 308s. The best Ive found are the factory QV rims. Here are the pics, look at where the spokes meet the inner part of the rim lip. The fronts have raised spokes in relation to the inner ring of the rim and the rears are recessed slightly to account for the wider rear rim as well as giving the look of a deep dish rear rim. They really set the car off and the repops lose this effect, its subtle to most, a stick in the eye to me. I weighed the rims, between 7-8lbs and if I recall, the repops and the 328 rims were approximately 16lbs each, thats double the weight for you mathematically challenged individuals.

I dont plan on trashing my QV rims so Im going to use them, maybe you need curb feelers. Considering the differences in tire weights from brand to brand you cant compare but the end result will be a lighter unsprung assembly if you have lighter rims. The weight isnt my biggest concern like I said before, its the "4 front rims on my 308" look that matters to me and others. At least the others will be informed buyers rather than slurping up all the hype and only seeing the dollar difference. Bottom line, you get what you pay for.

If all I showed was the pictures of the car and not the closeups you wouldn't have known either way if I hadn't have told you. In 3 years I have had not one comment about the authenticity of my wheels. (I guess they were just being polite then:p)

My car is a driver, it's not perfect, not even close to concours but it still looks good and nearly stock. It's lowly 308, not a 275, no comparison, not an issue..

I know you hate these wheels and from what you say I can't help thinking that you would prefer that they were not on the market.

You should be commended and applauded for providing this public service.

In the mean time, I am happy with mine and it's repro's as much as you are with the OEM's, for different reasons but just the same. You have your opinions and I have shared mine as well as my experiences. I would like to think you and I can remain objective and respectful about this.

Nobody plans on trashing rims, it happens, even to you.
I can see by your sarcasm that you have this all consuming obsession and hatered with these reproduction rims and the people that use them.

    Objectivity out the window.

Nothing to see here, move along.

BTW, hubcentric rings are used on many production cars and doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the wheel.

You call it a public service, I call it helping which is what this site if for. Im stating facts and have shown the differences and what bothers me the most about the repops is if they spent the time to make them, why not make them right? They should have taken the extra step and made an exact copy and Im disappointed that I spent the money on them and lost my shirt when I sold them so yeah they should not be on the market especially if they were machined incorrectly for the hub! Thats a major !#$!@%-up if you ask me and I dont think 308's are "lowly" but worthy and timeless.

Your opinion is biased too, you bought some and love em mainly because they are cheap. If I screw up and hit a rim Ill buy another.

Hubcentric rings on production cars dont reflect the quality of a factory rim - maybe! But in this case it does as they were made to correct an error as per superformance, lol.

They are all front rims. Wow. I didn't know that. I have seen aftermarket 16 inch wheels and I knew something didn't look right but I wasn't sure what. Now I know. I think the OEM 16 inch wheels are great. I have never had the aftermarket but I would recommend getting OEM if possible. While they may be more money I must assume the aftermarkets aren't very good since Paul dislikes them this much. I will say that something just doesn't look right about them. I know what it is now but still they just don't look right.

OK, fine. You're right. They are not the same. Point conceded. The price difference should really make that clear. There is expensive then there is so-da--ed-stupidly-expensive-there-is-no-freaking-way-they-are-worth-it-expensive. Have a nice day.

Well, only the newer 308s reflect the rear wheel/front wheel setup, it was 7.5" all around FIRST!!!

So if I was "wishing", I'd want same size all 'round 7.5" X 16".......my aftermarkets all mimic the later setup, but it really should be the first...

You know how you told me about the 'extra stamping' labeling on the spare only, Newman, years ago??

Well, my Chromodora set doesn't have it, but my second car's Campagnolos DO!!!!! The owner had the 'extra lettering' one on the ground, RF, as he had some chips on the one I found in the spare.......amazing.

I dont remember the conversation bubba, must have been a while ago. I still have my lettered up spare which I should probably sell with the XWX tire. I have 5 QV rims now and dont really need it kicking around anymore.

For the record I wasnt trying to be a PITA, just trying to help or give another side to the story, no offense intended :)

Actually, that was quite informative. I have just finished looking at some closeups of mine vs originals. Is it the thickness of the outer casing that gives it away (along with the lack of raised lettering)?

My old ones balanced nicely. That can not be an issue with the Trutlands/Superperformance product.

    To all,
Thanks for the ton of tech info and pics to support it. When I started this thread it was in hopes of finding a set of wheels and any tech info available. You guys have provided sources and pictures beyond my expectations and I thank you all. BTW I didn't mean to start a chatbrawl over original vs repops,
simmer down, man. ( my 2cents, I agree with Newman, or I would already own a set of reproductions).
FYI My car is a very very late 85 euro. It has the 390 TRX's, but the 16's were an option on the euro and stock equip on U.S. 308s that year. I've GOT to have factory wheels, no option, and yes my wallet is open wide.
Thanx again, and if anyone sees or hears of a set or info, PM me or e-mail me.
It seems when the word gets out, their gone.

Newman, the only thing that sucks in this thread is your crass delivery. Spasso presented a compelling, and diplomatic, position demonstrating an informed, positive and persuasive perspective. You may not agree with his position but you identify yourself as someone lacking diplomacy skills and manners through the choice of your abrasive and critical words. A little decorum and decency goes a lot further than "in your face"....

Just a few quick questions regarding originals or repros.Do all original QV rims have the raised lettering or did some come out with the black Ferrari lettering? Are the repros 7" front and rear?

Nice to meet you Cliff, done whining now?

As for the factory QV rims, they came with raised letters or with decals. The repops come only with decals, they are 7 and 8 inches wide like the originals, they just look like 7" rims because of the spoke positioning.

I think Newman is just very discriminating and detail oriented, (obsesive restoration is not a bad thing). A little harsh on delivery, but still truth.
If I decide to buy the repros I will be "settling" for less than the best, I
know that, and everyone else should too, that's all he's saying.

Thanks Lou....hope you find a set. You can try Jeff at parts source, he had 2 sets, one with letters and one without. Im sure Ted will sell you the ebay ones as well, its costly but if you want to play you gotta pay. Finding one at a time to make a set was an option for me but I got fed up with waiting and just did it.

Crass delivery maybe but Ive been down this road many times on this site and finally - finally! Someone sees what Ive been saying all along.

Over the past year and a half I have managed to collect a set of 4 original 16"wheels. Two are 16x8j, and two are 16x7j. Two (one front, one rear) have the cast-in,raised letters and the other two just have the black decal(ORIGINAL!Speedline) Then, to complicate things further, two of the wheels are made of magnesium(Cromodora), and the other two are alloy.
I'm not aware of a difference between normal injected 308's and the later QV's regarding the factory issue of 16" wheels.

Just wondering, is there anything against using the mags and alloys together on the same car? There is a small weight difference, would that affect anything?

If the two fronts matched and the two rears matched, it wouldn't be that unreasonable, but in your case I think you'd be better off value-wise either getting an all stock Magnesium set together or an all Aluminium alloy set -- especially if the two 8x16s don't have identical spoke-to-rim designs -- do they?

You could almost buy a complete set of the Aluminium reproductions for the $ value of that one 8x16 Magnesium 308QV wheel ;)

Yes, And if you want to sell it, let me know. I am looking to piece a set together as an option. Stay in touch. If I find more than I need or a combo
that would get us two matched sets etc. I'll PM you.
    Ciao,

So if I understand the details, the repros from UK, would basically look almost correct on an early 308? Has anyone compared the weight of an older 14 inch wheel to a repro 16 from the UK?
