My name is Scott Major and I am posting this to uncover what info I can for a business plan. I have Robs permission to post in here for this topic.

I would like to know what electrical motors and ignition systems (distributor or solid state) on all F-cars have been a problem over the years.

Be it windshield wiper motors, window motors, starters, stators, ingnition boxes, coils. Anything. Please let me know your model of car and what the weaker points have been.

Also, if there were an aftermarket solution to these problem area's for less than a factory replacement. Yet offer better a warranty, more reliability and performance (ignition-related) all while retaining stock look and feel so not to detract from Concourse rating.. would any of you be interested?

Again any and all feed back is welcome. I look forward to your replies.

    Thanks
    Scott Major.

I couldn't say that it's a particular weak spot (maybe others could comment?), but a pal of mine needed a suspension actuator motor for his 355.

The issue is not so much the reliability, but the cost of them. It really does bring a tear to the eye...

    £400 sterling each (from memory).

i have a 1990 348, passenger side window goes up and down slow too slow !!!
ive had it apart many times but cant figure it out. with the door panel apart it works ok, but as soon as i put it back together, back to slow ...... but windows in ferraris, at least the older ones do have a tendency to move slow, way to slow...

    Thanks for the info guys.

I have been told by the service guys at FO.N.E. that the window movement is slow due to a design issue. They say the best fix is to lube the hell outta the tracks and slide mechanism in the door itself.

The motors can be weak how ever.

Other than 348 Altenator issues and 355 suspension actuator motor issues how are things on ignition peices. I have heard that many 308's have switched to an MSD ignition or the like due to a low out put frmo OEM.

    Thanks again..

cooling fan motors are a common rebuild....as are the dual heater blower motors....all of which have been done on my car (308).... also, rebuilt the fuel pump. basically, the motors and things were sourced by ferrari from other vendors and often ,in my opinion, were not up to the dask....I do know that the cooling fan motors are Lucas parts...and we know their reputation.

    A friendly bump..

How about rebuilt components.. espcially for the vintage parts? Any huge demand or issued on some of the harder to find things?

from what i understand the exaust ecu in the 348 to go bad , some quite often, i have replaced one of mine so far and ive owned my car since dec 2004. its a very easy fix and the ecu costs about 400 bucks. although nothing is cheap when owning a ferrari. its the price you have to pay for owning a piece of art.

308 ignition upgrades to get rid of points are very popular.

You guys rock! Keep this great info coming.

After speaking with the local Ferrari dealer I have found the primary reason why the 348 alt. fail.. apparently it is a poor bridge design. I am looking at this design and will see what we can develop for all of the Mondial-T, 348 and F40 owners.

The passenger window of the 348 was slow when I got the car about two months ago. I had it fixed at Tim Stanford's. The basic cause is the way the electrical wiring was done for the doors. The wiring that goes between the door and the body of the car is a large plug in with about twelve wires. Instead of the wires going continuous through the body, they are plugged in at the connection at the body. This causes the wire to make a pretty severe bend every tim eyou open the door (and the doors have to be opened pretty wide to get into a 348). After several years of being bent, the individual copper strands break leaving fewer and fewer strands to carry the current to the motor. They replace a section of the wire including the connection where these wires bend and (internally) break. If you try the passenger door switch it will usually work better for the passenger window. That is because the passenger door is used less and less of the strands are broken. Also, corroded or faulty switches are sometimes the culprit. They replaced six wires in my driver's door and now the passenger window works well. If your window is hanging up while it is raising, you can adjust the position of the track by shimming the window mechanism. Take off the door loever from the outside to work on the window tracks. Hope this helps. I also had some work done on the electrical circuit for the A/C blower to reduce heat buildup in the wiring that is a common problem with 348's.
