How much does it cost to post an $85M ad on eBay? I thought they charged partly in proportion to the reserve/buy-it price.

It would be a lot more than that. Total price is $168 million. From industry experts I've talked to, figure 10% of the purchase price to staff, operate and maintain a luxury yacht. That's 10% annually...

that is correct. in this case maybe more as you would have a pilot and dr. on staff too! that does not speak to the 20 man/woman crew to operate and maintain her!

oh and btw...you have to keep her slipped in a full on commercial facility...you don't even get to hang out w/ the yacht set as at 400 plus feet, she is too big to land in any marina i am aware of!

I was going to put in my offer, but it doesn't have two, not even one, helicopter pad for me and my guests.

Mark Cuban bought his G4 or G5 (whatever it is), on ebay for $42 million, I think. I heard it was the largest online purchase ever.

You have to wonder what's wrong with business if you have to resort to advertising on eBay. I would think the Robb Report, the WSJ or magazines like Money and Fortune would be more suitible advertising mediums. let's not forget eBay was invented to sell used Pez dispensers!

That was all a publicity stunt for Gulfstream and Cuban. He didn't really buy it over the web. He bought it just like anyone else buys one.

Actually, he made contact with them and negotiated the terms of the deal via email. He didn't see or talk to anyone about it until after they agreed on deal terms, when they flew a plane in for a test ride.

Well, that's a far cry from saying he bought it over the internet, now isn't it? I think some people think he went to www.gulfstream.com, spec'ed it out and put it on his Amex.

I also have a hard time believing he spec'ed out a new plane without talking to anyone on the phone or meeting them in person. I have a proposal from Bombardier on my desk right now for a new Challenger 604. The option list is several pages long and much of that stuff is impossible to decipher unless you're a pilot or mechanic.

BTW - I was told by a Gulfstream salesman that the whole Cuban/internet thing was a publicity stunt (mostly on Cuban's part, if I recall correctly).

So that it would get word of mouth out about the boat and get people talking about it.

Sounds like the F-chat party barge to me. We all chip in for the purchase, hire a crew of Russian mail order "hostesses", and set sail for Maranello via Australia.

That looks very sleek for a 400' yacht...many boats over the 200' range start to get pretty ugly. That pool on the back is pretty outrageous.

I'll throw in $5. That only leaves 167,999,995 left to go...

For $168M, it's pretty clear that the buyers are basically the Forbes 400 and all the builders have to know who's on that list. One would think that direct/targetted marketing would work better for that select a clientele.

At the same time, it may be a cheap way to get some recognition for the yacht builder/broker if someone's looking for something a bit more down-scale.

In answer to my own question (what does the eBay listing cost if there's are reserve/buy-it-now price), I looked it up since there wasn't a ready answer and it's pretty cheap for the publicity: aside from insertion fees and stuff which are a few more bucks, the value proportional part of the listing fee is 1% of Reserve Price (up to $100). So for less than $120, you get international recognition, picked up by news services that do a story on the listing, etc.
