I've been in the market for a another Ferrari since I sold my 328 a month ago. I had been looking at TR's, but the ferrari mechanic who is 3 miles from my house only works on 8's and I really want him to do the work when it is needed. I also think that the TR may be alittle at the high end of my price range and would leave me little $$$$ for inevidable repairs. My question is this I just drove in a 1989 348ts with 10,100 original miles and is owned by the original owner. It is red/tan original paint except rocker panels were painted red to match car. It had the major done 4 months/500 miles ago including updating the cam bearing? Cost was $7500. Car leaks nothing and engine bay is very clean. I don't know the history on the clutch yet , but the car shifted and drove very smooth. Interior has no rips or tears but could use a detail. It has all books, tools and original window sticker. Car has new tires and is all original except paint on rocker panels. I know that the 2.5 injection in not as nice as the 2.7, but is it that big of deal? How much would you pay for such car. The mechanic who showed it to me thought the owner might want 55k. I said 50k, he said he would talk to the owner.

    Thanks,
    Brent

$50K would be about right in my book, given the low miles and fresh 30K service, along with the updated paint scheme. The 2.5 versus 2.7 is mainly about "self diagnosis" - the 2.7 gives you a code supposedly telling you what the problem is. As for me, even though I happen to have the 2.7, it's useless, because when it comes to FIXING something on the car, I'm a complete idiot. So it does me no good to know WHAT the problem is, since I'm going to have to pay some grease monkey to fix it ANYWAY.

    Buy the car. Sounds nice.

I'd agree that $50k sounds about right; but I am also of the opinion that if the car looks like a "good one" (and Brent you are not a newby), you shouldn't mind paying a couple extra grand if it will get you the car, before someone else gets it. In other words, if the car has a recent service, shows well, and drives well, I would not hesitate to pay $52k or $53k even if in my gut, I thought the car was only worth $50k. It may be a long time before you find another "cream puff", that is right in your backyard, and doesn't require travel and other hassles to find.

Sound advice. Always worth paying a few extra grand for the "right" car.

Ah, Dave you are a very wise man. Good cars are hard to find and I hate traveling too. I'm hoping to hear from the owner soon. Will let you know.

    Thanks,

Hey I also found a guy willing to sell me 355 wheels too! Didn't you say they bolt right onto the 348 with no spacers needed.

Yeah...they're well worth it. The notion that you have to change lugs is urban legend. While you're in a spending mode, you might as well spring for a chrome shifter ball, some drill-through pedals, and the carbon fiber kit that Ryalex sells.

BTW, here's my unit with the PROPER wheels:

GET THE WHEELS!!! That is the coolest upgrade you can do on a 348. Even if the deal falls through on this car, GET THE WHEELS!

Okay, catching my breath...the 355 wheels really update the car (imo) and look awesome.

    Nuff said... :)

OK, OK I'll get the wheels. The tires are kinda shot though. I've been doing some thread searching can you recommend the tire size? Seems like the front are going to be stock 225/40/18. However, the rears are either 295/35/18 or the stock setup 265/40/18. What do you think? I guess if the deal falls through at least I have some nice wheels.

I'm one step ahead of you Husker. Turns out I already bought the 5 speed chrome shifter ball from Hill when I thought I was buying a TR. Also got chrome front and rear horses. Pedals will follow as I loved them on my 328. However, I bought a new set of red TR mats with a beautiful shield on them that I will need to sell. Your car pics gave me the 355 idea, they look great.

Brent, I have 295/35-18's on the rear of my 348 on 10" rims and they are fine. I'm also running 235's on the front but I'm running 8" rims and I believe the 355 wheel is 7.5" width so 225 should be fine.

Save some Tubi money too - 348 really sounds magnificent with the Tubi (even better with Hyperflows/test pipes).

    Cheers
    Kevin

    Hi Brent,

Sorry for the late post--congratulations on getting the car!

But I agree with Dave here. I'd have no problem paying 55K for that car. In fact, if I were selling it I'd probably ask 57. The description sounds like the car is perfect! The low mileage, the fact that the owner is the original owner, the color, the service, etc. make the car worth more than a typical '89--more than a typical 348, for that matter.

The ONLY difference between the 2.5 and 2.7 system is that the 2.5 does not have the on-board diagnosis feature. So it's not that big a deal! People make it out to be more than it is. :)

I think 50k is about right. I just paid $47k for an 89 348ts w/ 22k miles and the full service recently completed 9incl. clutch). Good luck!
