I'm looking at a 355 spider f1 to buy. I was told the car is up to date on the services. 1.What is a reasonable price for a 98 355 f1 with 23k on the engine? 2.How's the f1 vs 6spd manual? 3.Does the Ferrari required engine out every 2 yrs. or 15k miles? 4.What's everyone average cost per year of owning a 355? Thx for any input
Up to date ? Ask to see all the service records. That is an indication of its condition. You might also ask to see a Carfax on the car, might spot a red flag or two. Your location in the world ??? Prices differ around the world. There is one listed on here by a F chat member for $50 K, a dealer may ask $100 K for the same car after a bit of work on it. I own a 6 sp, I like to shift it. F1 drivers usually like their paddle shifters. I think Ferrari suggests 3 yr or 30,000 miles for the major engine out service. A lot of people wait 4 to 5 years, some don't. Few owners put 30 K miles on their Ferrari in one year. Yearly cost, they like gasoline at 8000 rpm and drink a lot. Insurance is not bad, second car recreation use. As mentioned up to date serviced, there are known issues with these cars. Some are NOT cheap to fix. Get a PPI on the car before you buy it. After that go to the 355 sub thread, search for buying a 355 and read all of that. Oops this is the 355 thread so just do a search right here. Someone might even post a link to the 355 buyers guide, I am not skilled at posting links. Due diligence before you buy can save you a lot.
Read the master sticky index at the top for some standard advice then scroll down here to look at interesting threads - you're not the first person to try to buy a 355 or wonder about F1 vs manual and many have posted previously PS your price/cost request would be helped if you fill out your profile - are you US based ?
For what it's worth, I've owned my 348 for one year and my running costs have averaged $1.50 per mile (did not require belt or major service). In one year I've driven it approximately 4200 miles (total on the speedo is 41,178). Best advice I can to a prospective buyer, make sure you do a PPI and have money in reserves for maintenance (both expected and unexpected). Also, if given the chance, I'd do it again. This year's been a blast. I live in SoCal. Brian
I think I kind of skipped that part in my posting That and I figure every mile I drive it takes $1-2 bucks off the resale value, and I don't really give a rats a**.
