Took my car for a spin and noticed the alternator has strange sound!; more like friction sound!
In addition, I'm hearing rattle sounds from the engine side when slowing down or braking; strange!
I plan to replace the engine oil since I noticed it is low.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Good day Mohammad,

Without actually hearing the sound it is virtually impossible to make a guess...If you wish some armchair/remote diagnosis, then uploading a video (with audio) to YouTube, etc. would allow others to hear what you are hearing. That being said I would still recommend you take the car to a competent mechanic, as he will be able to make a much more accurate diagnosis.

    Cheers,

    Sam

When you say the oil is low, how low is low? Did the engine run out of oil and operate with no oil pressure for a period of time or is it just a quart or so low? My next question, does it sound like it is coming from the front of the engine right next to the alternator? If the engine did not run out of oil and the sound is coming from up by the alternator then my guess would be a loose timing chain. Have you ever had it adjusted? Also it's difficult to describe sounds so I'm not sure what friction sounds mean but a loose chain almost has a clacking sound. The chain is fairly easy to adjust but the question is how tight to make it. The book says to tighten it down until it just starts to get noisy and then back off 1/4 of a turn. There have been a few good threads on this subject so please do a search.

Where are you located in Missouri? Perhaps some of us who live in Missouri could suggest a good mechanic near you.

When I checked the dip stick, I noticed the oil level is 1/2 or so.
It might be the timing chain as you suggested and I will look at it this weekend.
    Thanks for the tip.
