Not meant to be flippant, but since the question is limited to users that are reading this forum and have had to deal with child support in Maine, you probably won’t get too many replies. Also, “child support” is a fairly wide subject.

I would suggest you ask Chat GPT some of the questions you may have. It may provide information you may not have thought of to ask.

We are using it daily to enhance our productivity and communication skills. It knows more than you could ever imagine.

I appreciate your advice. I will do just that, as soon as I figure out how to use Chat GPT. I guess I could ask Google how to use it? ;)

I have a family member that is paying a huge amount of child support for a child that was the result of a one night stand, not that this matters.
The mother is doing her best to finagle the system.
She also just got married. I’d like to help him find someone who is knowledgeable in these types of situations, who is an advocate for the farther.
The amount of money that is taken out of his paycheck seems extremely excessive.
    Thank you.

The Maine Child support guidelines are pretty straightforward, take the combined income of the parents and number of kids, this case one. This equates to the cost per week for the child, that number is then split between the 2 parents based on their percentage of the combined income.

    2017-Child-Support-Table (maine.gov)

Hopefully the new husband will adopt but I wouldn't count on that, although an attorney might be able answer if that changes the equation any.

Here are the guidelines from 2022, realized the one above is from 2017.

I hope he has maintained a relationship with the child. He must have been there for the birth, or paternity was decided by a court?

As to the husband adopting the child, your friend would be giving up on parental rights I believe, probably depends on the state.

I worked with someone who married a co-worker who had 2 young kids, he adopted her kids. Came home to find the ex and the wife in bed. She moved back in with her ex. My friend had to pay child support until the kids turned 18. Talk about a whack to his paycheck.

My family member never had a relationship with the mother. One night stand. He was notified of the pregnancy and took a paternity test. He has maintained his obligations financially.

The mother does not want him to have a relationship with the child and he is ok with that. Giving up parental rights would not be a problem.
