We just redid ours. Bathrooms can be pricey. I can share some pics when i have a chance. We used basketweave marble tile on the floor, and a slab of yellow onyx for the sinks. Much of the trick, after simple 'appliance' layout is quality of materials and fixtures; interestly, we were hunting for the perfect hanging fixture, and my wife found it at a flea market. But, that was a fluke.

There are many magazines dedicated to remodeling. A trip to your local plumbing or tile store showroom will show you what is in style right now. You can spend $2,000 to $20,000, you should consider your budget first.

Actually yes I do. You should have told me today you could have come over to see. I just did everything last winter...Jay did the floors, and I did add the tub. In the main bath I added an oversized tub with 8 jets. Standard is 5 ft, I had the space and squeezed in the 6 footer...uch better when your soaking for sure. I highly rexommend. Since your redoing the bath Tom, a new tub is about 400, and you can get a jac tub for about 1,000. its worth it, but you will need an electrician to wire it up and into your fuse box in the basement.

Step number one is get a woman. Nobody knows bathrooms better than a woman.
Screw the whirlpool bathtub, in fact don't waste your time on a tub of any kind. Put in a real nice shower with a steamer. You will thank me if you have winter where you live.
Put in two sinks well seperated from each other. If you have a mate this will make them very happy. No woman likes to share a sink with a man.
When you put in the toilet, put in a six inch line just under the toilet base, you can flush an incredible amount of stuff without a plug up.

Just a few ideas that are worth their weight in gold:

Put a dimmer on the main lights...it's VERY nice to have the lights super-dimmed when you have those occassional visits to the bathroom late at night. I just got done with a nasty stomach-flu, and trust me, it was really nice not having bright lights blazing on full brightness. Something happens when light hits our eyes, makes it tougher to go back to sleep. A dimmer will run ya $7 and you can retrofit one into your current bathroom.

The other thing I did was installed a water-filter right next to my sink, just like the one in the kitchen. I even ran an extra line to the kids bathroom. Once you get used to filtered water, it's hard to go back to tap!

Another nice feature is in the toilet room, the fan switch has several buttons designating time intervals of 5, 10, 15 & 20 minutes: you merely push the button and the fan runs for that designated amount of time...no returning to turn-off the fan later.

ALWAYS use stainless steel burst-proof water lines on the sinks and toilet, nobody ever thinks to change or inspect their old lines till one day they burst!

Beyond that, just look at a lot of magazines for things you like, merely incorporate those ideas & concepts into your design. A really nice classy touch is a mural, you can have an artist paint a nice mural on the wall. Don't make the bathroom too overly elaborate, it's one thing to make it nice & luxurious, another to go overboard and seem to try too hard to make a big fashion statement: what's hip today is tomorrows joke.

And...oh yes: beside the requisite phone in the stall, a computer terminal with online access while your doing your business, if questioned you could always prove that you give a crap! :)

I agree with all of Steve's ideas except the mural. It's great if you've got a decent size bath but can come off as 'trying too hard' in a smaller one. The upside is that you can easily rectify such a problem with a coat of paint. :)

If you're not living in your dream home (meaning resale value be damned) just go with some neutral colors in the tile, solid cabinetry and a non-pourous material (marble, granite) for the counter-top(s). Spend the dough on things you'll touch, like faucets and shower controls; sinks and toilets are generally the same. A clear shower door with a floating hinge can really open the room up (and dual shower heads are kinda fun too!)

    Post some pics..
