Hi Tom; I sent you an e-mail a few days ago but not sure if you got it. Also read the rest of this thread and it sounds like your car had an air bleed style system adapted to it. This was not typical for the CIS injected engines which did not need air injection to pass the FTP (Federal Test Procedure). Of course that is assuming the engine was in proper running order. Back in the 80's there were a lot of different people trying their hand at this and so there were a variety of interpretations on how to do it. If the "Johsnon Box" was indeed a DC Johnson unit (there were also a variety of knock-offs), and it was controlling an air pump diverter valve, then it was an FAC1-R which was intended for use on carburetted engines. This system may have been used to compensate for a poorly tuned or damaged engine, dirty injectors or anything else that would cause a high HC condition in the exhaust. Or it may have simply been done that way because those were the parts available at the time. At any rate, depending on your goals for the restoration, you may want to consider either rebuilding it with the same design, or changing it to the more typical fuel pressure control system without the air pump.

As I promised, I did a bit of digging and found some items that may be of interest...

I had a turbo euro 308qv registered in the peoples republic of Califohneeya. The seller said it was smog legal at the point of purchase in CA. It was not! Thank you Tristram! James Patterson of Norwood had the genious to put in an electric smog pump in the car and a summit racing cat. It passed with flying colors. I have all DOT papers and an exemption from the EPA.

    NV is much easier......

    Cheers
