Greetings, seeking an Fcat member to eyeball a car for me at BMW dealer in Harriman, NY - not looking for a PPI level ( I'll have that done if car is visually OK, just a good walkaround to highlight what photos can miss, chips, scratches, sticky buttons, leather pulling.
Please DM me if you can help.

Take the advice or leave it, but run fast. Plenty of other Californias out there.

A good bet this car has been passed around and beaten on by the staff (we used to do it) and could be hiding some things you don't want to find as an owner.

It is rare that good Ferraris end up at non-exotic dealers and for more than any but the most M of a X, 7, or 8 series??? The math ain't adding up.

I agree -- there are concerns in big gap in Carfax -- getting any information from dealers ( even some of the F ones I have worked with ) is crazy hard. Any car on Bring a Trailer has 10x the info a dealer wants to give you. I would prefer to find a car from a private party I can interact with. I have heard that trading in a Ferrari is a decent hit so not sure why more do not try a private sale - plenty of online tools available - cars.com offers free ads to individuals.
On this particular car dealer is not happy to allow PPI at Ferrari dealer so that also concerning.

Plenty of dealer principals are Ferrari owners - you wouldn't believe how common it is. In my state alone, I can think of at least 8 that I or we sold to back in the day. Even Harley dealers are big into Ferrari - I know 3 personally who bought a series of Ferraris. They slap the dealer plate to avoid the tax and let their guys do the oil changes and only send it in for warranty work or big items.

I don't agree that these cars get passed around by staff anytime they end up at a non-exotic store - to the contrary, there may only be 1-2 people allowed to even open it, let alone move it. It's a big liability and there's plenty of stories of techs wrecking exotics

Just call and find out what the background is first. Also, there are services that you can use, including at the Ferrari level with specialists who will put eyes on a car for you..

I agree with the above.. I worked in Mercedes dealer for some years and we would get Ferrari etc in. I wouldn’t say ‘often’ but definitely got California’s etc traded in on G wagons, S classes or AMGs etc - many or most were one owner cars that we just took in as a trade and sold retail - happens like any other car. I wouldn’t be afraid of a non Ferrari dealer having a used Ferrari for sale. I find that they usually a better deal cos they take it in cheap cos they’re afraid and sell quick as long as they make some profit cos they don’t wanna hold on to it for months and pay floor plan etc… usually much better deals that at Ferrari when they show up.

Good points... It would be cool if that's the case here.

Online sites are not the problem. When selling a used car, particularly an exotic, sellers need to deal with -

    - scammers
    - people with no intention of buying the car but would love a test drive
    - tire kickers
    - people interested but will nitpick and price haggle ad nauseum
    - people who are just looking at the car for a friend (or someone who asked them on a chat site to look for them ;) )
    - and finally, but most importantly, making sure they receive clear payment before signing over the title

All good points. I have asked about 5 Caifornia's so far -- there were a few listed where the dealer has such a terrible reputation I just cannot
take the risk -- 3 high-end non-Ferrari, 2 Ferrari dealers -- in all but one case even after multiple questions I could not get as complete a picture of the car or its history compared to the typical Bring a Trailer listing. One dealer immediately did a video and picture walkaround and noted flaws - its not that hard??? Regarding payment and title - at least 2 of the dealers I talked to have BBB complaints about failing to give the purchaser title many months after the purchase - that should give anyone pause especially if the state you are buying the car in does not a have a specific law allowing you to void the sale and turn the car back in for a full refund. My point is buying from a dealer does not completly eliminate title/transfer risks.

I wonder what they’re title foot dragging was related too.
If they “owned” the car, I would guess they were pulling a CNC type of thing where the floor plan probably held title, OR consignee (but in the dealers hands) and they were using the funds to pay Peter’s car off before paying Paul.

    Ponzi style scum bags

I finally got confirmation that the Ferrari California for sale by Orange BMW was driven by the dealership principal and is offered on
consignment. I was not able to get any service records so I have passed on the car.
