I was wondering what the general opinion on here is regarding the purchase of a 308 engine that came out of a 81 2V 308 with about 10k miles on it. It has been in storage since 85.
I have a 78 308GTS, would it be possible to put my webers on that 81 engine or are there more complications involved.
How about transmission ? is it the same as on my 78?

    Thanks for any input,
    Helmut

I forgot to say that I would like to put the carbs on there to gain the HP which are lacking on the 81.

    thanks,

Before you puchase the engine. I suggest you at least have a knowledgeable person (might it be yourself, I am not sure of your experience) crack open the cam covers and the head to view the cylinders to insure that moisture has not crept into the engine. I worry, you might get it home to find that it has been eaten away by undetectable cancer on the inside of the motor. If it looks good then please remeber you will need to change all the seals and piston rings etc. due to old age and oil not flowing. They may look ok, but under pressure it will no doubt start to leak oil. Rings are about $550 for a set, seal has been a wile, but I think it was in the neigborhood of $800 for everything, so factor this into your price.

Helmut -- You can use the SPCs at the FerrariUK spare parts site yourself to see if some of the major PNs are shared or not (block, gearbox housing, motor mounts, etc.).

Personally, I'm pessimistic about this idea working out well unless the price is very, very reasonable -- i.e., low enough that if you resold a few major components at the E-bay price (crankshaft, gearbox, etc.) you could recover your $s.

hell if its cheap enough i would do a major service on it and start it. if it runs on a test stand and has compression, run with it if its cheap. but remember the old valves, rings ect may fail. by the time you rebuild the thing you may as well buy a recond. one or an engine from a recently salvaged car. it really depends on the price and how big a hurry you are in.

Thanks for all the input, I will see what price it will go for but I know it is pretty reasonable, I will pass the info on in case I won't buy it; may be some F chatter needs an eninge.

    Thanks,
    Helmut

Even if you did get it for cheap and replaced all of the seals and anything else that is suspect on it you may find a better deal buying a rebuild from T.Rutlands for 7800. You may find the price difference may not be that much after all is said and done.

It seems to be such a rare find, it looks hardly used but I guess time is a killer. I wonder if I should get the gearbox as a back up....

    Thanks

Spasso, are you sure of the price? i was told its "around" $7800.00 WITH A GOOD CORE TO TRADE IN . with no core they want "around" $10,000 for an outright sale. Atlantaman knows all about this, perhaps he will chime in.

I was going by what was advertised in the FCA Bulletin and I imagine that would be with a typical core exchange.

UNLESS THE 81 MOTOR HAS ALREADY HAD TEH VALVE GUIDES REPLACED--YOU WILL HAVE TO PULL THE HEADS AND DO A COMPLETE VALVE JOB.

All of 80-83 motors have had to have all valve guides replaced----and the compression I believe is lower that on earlier carb cars-------you better plan on spending another 2000 in addition to fix this motor before using it.

If it was cheap enough, it would be fun to buy this engine just to get some experience rebuilding a Ferrari engine. If you don't buy it, please pass the info along!

As for putting carbs on it and getting more HP, remember that you are still dealing with the '81 cams, compression, timing, etc. You would need to do a lot more than just throw a set of Webers on there to make it more powerful.

I've heard this too, but I've also read information that leads me to believe it was only the early 80/81 cars that had the valve guild problems, not the later ones. Ferrari had to warranty a few engines and they switched suppliers (are you sure it was valve guides and not rings???).

If it has any miles on it and the compression is still good more than likely the valve guides are fine.
