I am finally ready to purchase my first Ferrari and I believe the F355 to be the most appealing among my choices (328, 348, or 360). Question, F1 or stick? I have been searching for a Nero GTS, but they seem impossible to find. Any assistance would be appreciated. TIA.

Drive both and see which you like best. I'm personally an F1 guy when it comes to Ferraris but some people swear by the 6spd manual. Pick whichever you enjoy the most.

Call me old school, but true sports/performance cars must be manual shift. You can only be in complete control of your beast
if you are shifting it!... ummm... YEA!

Automatics are for Lincoln's, Cadillac's and Mercedes!

She's precious (and I'm talking about your daughter-although the background is nice too).
I'm old school too when it comes to a six speed. I recently drove my friend's AMG S63 with the paddles and wasn't impressed. It felt gimmicky.

Well I would! ok ok, you get to move an extra lever to go backward! lol

That still doesnt make you ONE with your car!

The newest Ferrari I will ever own is the LAST one they build with a 6-speed manual shift.

+1 Far from it. It's a manual that'll shift better than any human.

Who cares that an automatic shifts better or faster than a human? Its always been true. The point is that a true manual gives you better control over the car AND is fun!

So why buy an automatic and let the car have all the fun?

I don't think you quite get how the F1 works. Do you put your automatic car in neutral when stopped at a red light? You should with the F1 to prevent clutch wear. The reverse lever has nothing to do with the fact that the f1 is not an automatic. I'm no engineer, but the F1 is a far cry from an automatic.

If you define an "Automatic" as a torque converter with slip and slide characteristics that cost horsepower translation to the wheels due to mushy controls, you right...the F1 is not an automatic. If you define it as a driver function being performed by mechanical assist then it most definitely is an automatic...meaning "it does it for you". I personnaly preffer old school personal contact with ALL my senses to complete my driving experience. It's also the reason I don't listen to the radio, talk on my cell phone, or eat a burger in my Ferrari and the reason I drive a 348 vs. 355. I don't like power steering to dull the experience.

Just my humble opinion, No offense to F1 gearbox fan's.

My, my... You DO need guidance - you overlooked the 348! ;)

But seriously, F1 is a technological marvel. Go for it.

Be that as it may, it removes the most important aspect of driver interaction... and in a car like this, it takes away from the Ferrari experience!
Clutch or torque converter, it doesnt matter... Perhaps not the ''traditional'' automatic, but if a computer, vacuum modulator or whatever is doing the shifting FOR YOU... its an automatic!

Perhaps Webster may be of assistance here...

Seriously, after all these years admiring the 348 and 355 I NEVER realized that the 348 could look like a 355 by swaping out the bumpers. Despite the obvious technological advancement and ergonomical changes to the motor/trans and interior, respectively, it seems that the only thing keeping me from getting a 348 is hp. I like the look of group77racing's 355 "conversion" (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150254&page=8). I guess it wouldn't make sense for me to buy a 348 and do a similar conversion. I think group77racing did a heck of a job with the modifications and paint.

Not wanting to get heated here, but you are wrong. F1 is not automatic. I'm sure you think that a 6spd is more fun for you to drive, and that is your opinion and no one can challenge that, but to say F1 is automatic is incorrect.

F1 is excellent to drive and live with, I have been on 2 Ferrari fun runs with my car, the feeling is no less that shifting with a stick, it is different, it is excellent fun and makes the car feel very racy. I would recommend F1 shift to anyone who likes modern gadgets and wants a car to feel different to dive to their daily runner.

6spd vs. F1 = Different strokes for different folks.

Hmmm, would the anti-F1 crowd like to ditch the automatic starter in favor of a hand crank?? :D I mean c'mon guys, it's part of the experience! No question it's fun controlling the clutch position yourself, enjoying the thrill of a perfect double clutch downshift heading into a turn. But let's be honest, Ferrari is known for having a 'classic' shifter, not exactly what I'd want to race with. Every 355 magazine test drive I've read basically said 'yeah the car was quick, but the old school shifter hurt lap times'.

Ferrari road cars are race-inspired borrowing tech from F1. If the paddle shifter is good enough for Schumacher, then good enough for me! Seriously, you haven't lived until you've actually experienced flat foot WOT upshifts and lightning quick downshifts under hard braking going into a turn.

    Enjoy this, then decide:
