aaargh! - it's always somethin'... I have an '84 308 QV. In the past month I have been running hot on oil temp. Here's what's going on when I'm on the highway at 80 mph and 4k rpm: Weather in the 80s - Water temp under 195 - Oil pressure at 85 - but the oil temp is touching that middle "tick" between 210 and 280 on the guage. I don't recall it ever running that hot in the 3.5 years I've had the car. Usually I'm not happy about anything above the "210" mark. Oddly enough, it's running hottest when I'm at highway speed and the air flow is at it's strongest. It seems to get slightly "cooler" when I come off the highway and I'm in "stop and go". I have thoroughly checked the side intake and can't feel anything that would be restricting air flow. Any thoughts on the problem? What temp do you other "308ers" run in hot weather? Thanks!
I think you need to check the temp sender unit! Get a digital thermo scanner and shoot the oil cooler, you could have a restriction but........
You should probably first make sure all is well with the gauge and sending unit, and especially with the wiring supplying and connecting the two. If all is well there, the oil cooler would be next. Make sure both the oil flow and the air flow to the cooler are normal and the cooler itself and the oil lines to it are in good shape.
See of the guage is reading high because you are going fast on the highway or if it's related to engine speed. (i.e. rev it in the driveway). Could be alternator/battery related???? (Voltage goes up when the engine revs, etc.) I do not know off the top of my head how the circuit is wired so this is just a guess.) Birdman
One of mine had erratic oil temp readings. I took the quick and easy way out and replaced the thermistor(under $20), before checking anything else. Problem solved!
