I would personally like to see the invoice. I have read quite a few peoples engine service invoice and you always need to check what's being done and how much you get charged. I saw one that the shop charged the guy almost $800 to swap headers out for aftermarket ones he supplied. That was with the engine out for service. I would have told them no way. I wil put the engine in the back of a friends truck drive it to the nearest parking lot install the new headers and have it back in an hour.

I had my heads rebuilt with cast iron valve guides and 360 valve seats and i think 6 new valves from Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale in 2011-2012. It was definitely over $10k on top of the major, I can double check the invoice later.

Needing seats is very unusual. Of all the 355 heads we have done not a single one required seats. That was a big cost by itself.

    +1

Seats are usually only replaced after something breaks or a machinist really screwed up re-cutting them during a valve job.

Didnt read all replies. I see good 355s for sale fairly often (valve guides done, timely maint.). So unless you must have this one, be open to bailing.

That said, every car needs something at some point - so starting with one that u can be involved in some of the process can be good. Both sides should be done as well as anything else that is cheaper to do now that things are out of the car.

Negotiate some of that off the price and frankly - negotiate some of that into (you pay for it) the price if you can work out good pricing per item.

If you buy that car with one side done - you will pay for the other side at some point - just do it now. Its not the seller's responsibility to do preventative maint like valve guides that have not failed but this is a good time to have someone pay for half and you work out a good price for the other half which will be cheaper than doing i later with all of the removal and reinstallation.

Concern I found with machine shops over the years

I'm coming from a mountion motor background is they charge you for their learning and tooling.

Use someone that has done that exact operation many times before with a proven track record. Cost is inline and you know it will work.

Exactly, rebuild both heads. All new guides, replacing some bent valves, seals, and all machining for both heads is costing me just about $3500. Which I felt was a pretty decent deal.

Only issue is that I have to wait a bit in queue until my machinist can get to it. I should have them back in early January.

I have the complete engine block and heads. Got it because it was available at a good price and had only 6000 miles. Why do some people have 4 sets of rims? Stock bronze guides were shot even with the low miles. Rest of engine is beautiful. May sell it in the future.
