I'm new to Houston. Any ideas on where I could take my kids karting, not the super fast ones, more kid friendly

Hey Robert this is where I used to go when I had my shifter kart. Great people there so give them a call. http://www.racekarts.com/Track/Layout.html
You will get all ages there and if you get to know some of the members you can take your kids there and enjoy their karts on testing or practice days. Heck the first kart I ever drove was members out there testing and just enjoying the atmosphere and weather (got within 2/10's of the track record for the 100cc class). Just go out there and make friends and on race weekend's it's just a big barbq family outing.

    Best,
    Gregg

Track 21. Hwy 6 in Bear Creek, north of I-10 a few miles.

They have simple karts, no shifting, but quick enough.

I go there every so often, lots of kids and adults.

It's a fairly long drive down south, but the kart track at Motorsport Ranch is really good. It's a nice facility and they have kid karts, slow karts and fast karts. And there's usually cool cars to see in the paddock and on the track.

The two places I was going to say have been recommended. Track 21 and the cool outside track at MSR Houston in Angleton. Haven't run at Track 21 but been there to check it out, friends have raced and said they loved it. They have 2 or 3 different track set ups inside and you can go they have days that they make one big track.

Hey is Track 21 still a good place to run? We (FCA) used to run a karting event over there, but the karts all had problems the last time we were there. IE only a few karts were fast and many were slow and it was the luck of the draw as to which kart you were assigned. We now run an FCA karting event at MSR's track about every 3rd month....

Track 21 is of course indoors, I have not been in a long time.

The one that gets a lot of good reviews (Houston Press Award) is Speedys Karts and game room out on Old Hempstead Highway...it's outdoors and the back straight is actually pretty long for reaching top speed. Inside viewing is air conditioned...

There's also one out on Highway 249 that includes an overpass in the track, I think...

Both of the last two are out among rather mundane surroundings, but there's still fun to be had.....

    +1 for Track 21

about two years ago I took my 2 nieces & nephew there to learn the basics of karting, they have smaller karts a kiddie track that easier for a 8 year old to drive.

They've revamped Track21 in the past year. They upgraded their karts, the management is better, all around a more solid experience.
Two reasons I suggest Track21 for you: 1) It's summer; it's Houston; an indoor track is priceless. 2) It's a really fun layout with some fast karts (faster than any rentals up in DFW)

Thanks for the update about Track 21. We should get a group over there some evening and have fun.
