I have been trying to enter the Double 500 for a few years now, but something always comes up (I buy a car and then feel guilty about yet another purchase). 05 is the year and I even have a navigator/co driver secured, a fellow FChatter.
The point is to get a car for less than $500, drive it for 500 km (used to be 500 miles, but the retirement rate was too high), and then probably donate it to a charity at the end of the event. It costs a symbollic amount to enter and it is organized by a swell and iconic local figure, Martin Swig. Do not confuse this event with the California Melee, although that sounds fun, too. Here is Martin's site.

    Why am I posting?
Please keep an eye out for a cool $500 car. Gremlins, X1/9s, bitcXing Camaros, cars with body damage, whatever else you think is interesting....A lot of people also decorate the cars. Perhaps an Alfetta with Carabinieri markings?
I will even authorize a purchase remotely !
Event is in June, so this is not a last minute thing. Post to this thread as you find stuff, please. I plan to park the thing at work until the event....
Here is an example or a guide, although this one is too expensive.

    Great !
The ad says that the car has a "fuel problem". It is either a reference to too much fuel and unintended acceleration (proven to be bunk), or it is currently on fire.
I will take a look on my next trip to Pleasanton.

    thx

    I don't know it's got a lot of miles! ;)

make sure you do a PPI.

I hope you're paying cash and not leasing fo this "toy".

Is this thing manual or auto (read F1)?

    :)

    Good luck Luke.
