Any of you guys know a good source for solid wood modern furniture? The wife and I are in the market for a few new chests of drawers, the problem is we cannot seem to find anything acceptable. We are looking for two tall modern/mid-century modern chests of drawers, the problem is EVERYTHING we come across seems to be made to some degree or another with particle board. I don't know if it's just me, but I refuse to pay over $300 for anything made of particle board given the fact it will only last a few years. I could even work with something created from bent plywood, but I can't seem to find a thing. The only solid wood pieces I can seem to find are all traditional and or Victorian. Any ideas?

look around locally at least in my area we have tons of custom builders/shops that will build whatever you want out of anything you want. My favorite piece of furniture I own is a huge coffee table made of solid burl walnut not cheap by any means and custom made but its worth it. Some pretty nasty furniture out there though even your "high end" stores sell alot of junk.

Try Thomas Moser and Berkeley Mills. Two of my favorites.

Post some pics of what you mean by "modern/Mid-century"...it's kind of confusing.

I build everything from furniture for homes to cabinets adn displays for retail stores...

All I know is that there is a HUGE mark-up on furniture. From the cheap stuff right up to the designer crap...

Not to defend anyone, but one of the reasons that most furniture makers choose to use particle board, engineered woods or other products in their furniture (other than solid wood), is that it is very hard to get/find good qaulity wood/stock to build with these days. A lot of stock comes from new growth or farmed/managed areas which produce fast grwoing tress which lack a tight grain pattern (which you get with slow growth)...as such this stock will expand/contract in a wide range which does not lend itself well to the tight tollorances of fine furniture building.

George is dead, and his shop is now run by his daughter. However, their craftsmanship is still incredible. Ten years ago we ordered a table from them, and it literally took one year before we had the table. Original pieces now go for 6 figures.
