I would like to hear from our Northern constituents as it relates to the importation, into Canada of a Euro car that has been made 49 state U.S. legal. Is this possible? If so who is the appropriate agency for a Canadian to speak to?

The reason I'm asking is that I have a potential Canadian buyer for my car that is located in Montreal and is getting a different answer each time he asks someone for an explanation they give him incomplete answers with unsubstantiated data. I would love to hear from anyone with relevant information so that I may give the buyer some accurate information.

Here is a link that could help.

    http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html

When I was shopping for my Mondial coupe I saw interesting cars from California, so I read a lot about importing to Canada.

You should also ask your pCb ( potential Canadian buyer ) to get in touch with a broker.

Is the car older than 15 years? If so, it is way much easier.

You should not trust people from Montréal ! ;:eek:p

You cannot legally import a Euro car to Canada unless it is 15 + years old.

The fact that it was "converted" for, and then "registered" in the US is irrelevant........it had to have been manufactured originally and imported to the US market by the factory on day one, in order to qualify for import to Canada.

"The Registrar of Imported Vehicles program regulates only vehicles originally manufactured for the U.S. market. Vehicles originally manufactured to standards other than the U.S. or Canada, are inadmissible into Canada under the current laws."

End of story. I was a dealer and have imported over 500 US spec cars to Canada in the last 5 years.

KDS has it right on. Federalized Euro cars into Canada cannot be legally imported. That said the chances of anyone catching that is RARE. All the RIV really notices is the latest US title on the car and it is unlikely that they will notice the car is originally a Euro car especially if it is a car that is normally imported to the US.

Actually RIV runs the VIN which shows it does not qualify, so you'd get no paperwork from RIV if the border screwed up.........and the CBSA agents at the border physically check for the existence of, and the info on, the 2 different door plaques affixed by the manufacturer (the EPA and country compliance plaques)..........
