Was just in my driveway and heard a low rumbling--walked up to see a pretty unique looking car that looked and sounded like it was something special.

Don't have a lot to go on, but maybe we can figure it out.

It's definitely older--was carbureted and did not have a fuel-injection smooth idle--seemed to be "lobing". Could have been a V-12 maybe. Very deep rumble (lower than the 328).

    It was black.

The engine was in the back.

I first thought it was the Ferrari "Breadvan". It didn't have the GTO front, the front was more elegant like a 275, though the front end seemed more petite like a Dino. The back end had that "el camino" look, where the engine bay seemed a bit disjoint from the middle/cabin area of the car. (Not as long as the pickup area in an el camino--just sort of square off like that).

He had the engine cover off, I think.

There were "flying buttresses" on either side of the engine.

Overall, it looked somewhat close to a Lambo Urraco overall, but nothing like a Jalpa. I thought it might have been an old vette but it did not have a "muscle car" flair.

The brake lights were not round, they were fairly square and mounted far left and right in the back body panel. Just one light assembly on each side it looked like.

It did not seem to have "ugly" bumpers or bumpers that stood out (like early US 308), it seemed cleaner than that.

I'm thinking it might have been an old jag... I want to say probably early to mid 70s in vintage, maybe earlier.

Any ideas? Is this enough to go on? Wish I had pics. The "breadvan" / el camino feel I think was its most striking feature... Hopefully that's enough to go on.

    Any ideas?

engine in the back, uneven idle and flying buttresses strongly suggest a Maserati Merak

maserati bora or something, one of the older masers had the unique flying butresses, and a V8 would explain a low rumble...

There were a few racing versions that had a V8 in them. I'm just amazed at how small those cars are.

That's the first sports car I remember seeing when I was a kid. Someone around the block had one and at the time my eyes were level with the base of the drivers side window for me to look inside. Now when I see one, I'm also amazed at how tiny these are, but they always put a smile on my face.
