Anyone else experienced it? Was playing Gran Turismo 5 on the 5th hour and it shut itself off. I thought it overheated (GT5 does extract all the performance the PS3 is worth!) and left it untouched for two hours. It won't start. Light turns green after that standard beep and it goes off again straight away.

Any input is appreciated. I have the first batch 60GB version which also plays PS2 games, so I would loved to keep this one (I don't like the styling of the new one either).

    Thanks :)

I think that's what happened to my first 40GB. I think it's the hard drive, or general hardware failure. If you are under warranty, send it in to Sony.

We have 5 years warranty, but they will probably delete my saved games... Been playing GT5 for 4-6 hours a day for a week now and I really, really, really don't want to lose that (if I do, I won't start over again and that's why I'm trying to fix it before sending it in...)

This exact thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago while playing GT5 Prologue. I sent my PS3 to Sony and they fixed it. I'm going to be getting it back this Friday or Saturday. I have the same model of PS3 that you have so its not under warranty so it cost me $150. Its steep but I don't want of those PS3 Slim models because you can't play PS2 games on them.

A few months ago I had a 80 gig with backwards playability but while many many hours in final fantasy 13 I got the yellow light of death, It sucked but its age and the amount of play my nephew and I had on it I defintly got my money worth out of it plus I was running out of hard disk space on it so I was forced to buy a new 250 slim and I couldn't be happier with until I saw the new 320 playstation gig move combo(I'm still debating on the new on and donating my 250 to my nephew)

I think I read that it's the PS2 chip/PS2 part in it that can't handle the heat. These new consoles generate big amounts of heat!

It will be fixed for free, that's not my worry at all. But I hope they can fix the same same machine without deleting all the saved stuff on it, that's the important part... And I don't want the fugly PS3 Slim as a replacement either. It's going to be one boring Christmas, because I heard they can take up to 2 months to repair these...

Every time the drive is deleted when I got it back. You can remove the drive but Sony won't repair it with the drive missing. I think they replace the complete PS3 with the same model.
I am tempted to get a different drive and and it it happens again I will put back in the original b4 I ship it off.
I also have the PS3 in an open area with a fan blowing on it.
