Is it CPO? Didn't look like it...

Looks like a lot of car for the money, and probably well kept with that low mileage.

IMHO, the asking price is not terribly high, especially considering it's listed at a Porsche dealer. I would buy it in the high $20Ks, but even at $30K it's not bad. The 996 was updated in 2002 or 2003, so while it's still an unloved model this one would be the least unloved of the run...

For your own good, please do not delude yourself for one moment that a used 996 is an Exotic. This one is 5-10% overpriced ( as I see it it has one good thing to recommend it....relatively low milage for an '03 vehicle). On the other hand it's anyones guess how much you can get out of it before it's time for a long-block engine replacement. This is a first-generation watercooled motor, based on the Boxster design, both of which damned near broke Porsche with their warranty problems.

You'd be much better off looking for a really clean GT3 for around $ 45-$50 k and making that a long-term keeper with which you could happily grow old. This model utilized the far superior 964 based engine that can be serviced by the world-wide circle of traditional Porsche technicians. Then you would own a genuine Exotic which will most likely not depreciate much further, but rather subtly and over time become your favorite car......but what do I know: I've only been playing with and owning / driving Porsches since '62

Not sure I would call a 996 an exotic. Mass-produced car with a high price tag is what I would call it. Go to Rennlist and learn all about 996 and its inherent issues before you buy one. You may just end up regretting the purchase.

I agree that a Porsche 996 is not an exotic. I owned one. Mid to high 20s tops for this car.

huh? the Boxster and 996 resurrected Porsche and (along with the Cayenne) made them the most profitable car company in the world, per car.

were there problems? yes. was the quality/fit/finish up to legendary Porsche standards? no. is a 996 (or for that matter, 997) an exotic? for the most part, no, with possible exceptions of GT2s and GT3s.

as to this car, agree with others, if you can get if mid to high $20's and you can get the maintenance records/CPO, buy it, otherwise lots of fish in the sea.

Manheim shows avg retail at $31,xxx and avg wholesale at $23,xxx. I'd say you should be able to purchase this 996 somewhere between $25 - 27k. Hope this helps. Good luck whatever you choose to do.

That is good advice but... I dunno if your going to find anything with GT3 heritage that you could call "clean" for $45-$50k. You may need to add a bunch of bux to get up to clean. Perhaps a track rat for $50k, or a uber-high miler, or a rebuilt wreck. Plan on more like $60k for a real deal no stories GT3.

Here is one that has a $62k asking price:

They just got it in, and have not taken photos yet. But I have seen it, and its nice with good options and a limited color (only six cobalt blue 2004's GT3's were reported to be produced).

But... Back on topic. That 996 you mention looks great, and its quite a bit of car for much less than GT3 money.

I sold my '01 996 with some GT3 upgrades, real GT3 mk1 body kit, wheels etc. I sold it for 26,500 last december and it had 41,000 miles I think. A true performer at the track, reliable and those RMS things are easily taken care of and if they ever happen. More to the point if a replacement engine was ever needed, well they go for about the same cash as a clutch job on a 360.
