I am looking to buy a 1993 Ferrari Mondial with a Valeo transmission. I love the car, but I have been told Mondials have alot of problems, especially electrical. I would appreciate any comments, both pro and con, on this model especially with a Valeo transmission. Thanks for your help in advance. P.S. A couple of belt replacement questions: Replace at the early of 15,000 miles or how many years? If a replacement (miles or date) cannot be determined, can you determine the the condition of the belt by visual inspection?
Welcome man but you will get ALOT more info on Mondial's from the 308/328/Mondial forum. I had read on here to avoid a Valeo tranny/clutch or whatever. When I am ready to purchase I think I'm gonna go with a Mondial also. Hey do us a favor and fillout your profile completely because it will help you with local's in your area who have the knowledge and experience that can helpout alot. Welcome once again and Merry Christmas, Gregg
Welcome. With regard to the belt replacement, Ferrari now specifies every 3 years or 30,000 miles (although many people think this new technical service bulletin is overzealous...) In a '93 Mondial (the Mondial T model) the engine must be removed, and you can plan on $5K+. Unless the belt is in terrible shape, no - you cannot simply inspect the belt to determine its condition. Moreover, a timing belt failure is likely to result from something else in the path going wrong. A tensioner bearing or water pump seizure could have the same effect. This is the main reason a good service history is valued for Ferraris. You want to know that last time the major service was performed and by whom.
