Many companies have tried to model the "Jack Welsh" approach to management and have failed. My company is one of them. IMO the failure was in the compensation. While paying for performance is a good concept, one needs to offer competitive compensation. After all why would a high performer want to stay at a company that says they will pay for performance and then cap that pay because they don't think they should have to pay that much. This happened with some of our top sales people. They had been given goals of reaching sales increases of 1 million with a 6% commission. Then when a few for these “super” reps reached to goal, the company said that they really didn’t need all that money so capped the commission at $75,000. Well there is no need to explain what these “super” sales folks did…………they left. The company as a whole, lost great people, lost the opportunity to grow sales by leaps and bounds and set in motion an employee dissatisfaction mode that will carry out for years.
