    Hey guys,

I am running into a problem with my replacement for the 77 308GTB. It is US Spec but the vendor says there were three different exhaust types for the 308 that year. They can't figure which is the one I had because it has been modified.

    1) Were there really three types or is the vendor getting confused with the GT4, US, and UK cars?

    2) I don't see a diagram in the parts manual or the workshop manual. I bought replacement springs with the bolts through them. Is there something that attaches to the bolts or do they bolt directly to a bracket on the exhaust. If anyone has a pic of how their original exhaust hangs that would be like mana from heaven. Sorry for the long note.

    Sashi,

Here is a photo of my "muffler" from my 77 # 22207. It weighes about 80 pounds because it is ful of metal that is supposed to get hot and "burn" or oxidise hydrocarbons. This monstrosity was part of the 77 usa smog equipment. it is heavy, where you don't need it - at the very rear of a tail heavy car), it is restrictive to the exhaust flow, (costs horsepower), it is heavy, ugly and did mention heavy.

As much as i would have loved to install a Tubi, my priorities for the budget were elsewhere and i had a flowmaster set up built for about 1/4 of a tubi and it is light.

    hth,
    chris

What's the flowmaster part# for the muffler you used?

I used 2 of these magnaflows and set them up in a straight back true dual setup. I've also seen these magnaflows in a transverse set-up too.

Sorry I can't help with OEM info, but obvioulsy there are a lot of custom options out there if you want to go that way.

I got mine through www.summitracing.com search under magnaflow mufflers and then universal fit.

Off the top of my head I don't remeber if I used the mpe-14416 or mpe-14415, they also have the mpe-14444 which is 2" in/out.

I'm thinking I used the 2.25" inlet/out (MPE-14415) becuase my 2" exhaust tubing slid perfectly inside the inlet and we welded it that way (not a but joint). I put some stainless tips on the outlets that slid over the outlet, so that worked well for welding too.

I've got more pics on my home PC I can e-mail if you are interested, but give me a day or two.

The sound is nice to sort of loud. There is a guy on F-chat who used the same mufflers (but transversely) and he sent me a sound clip of his car. I'll try to find the thread/pics and his name.

The PO of my car had a custom set-up as well and one of the mufflers had rusted through so the car was always a little loud. It seems to be about the same as with the rusted out muffler. It's not a bad loud, it's throaty, and at speed it's like being in a mid sixties corvette with sidepipes or a similar muscle car of the era.

Here's the thread I was looking for.

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65525&highlight=308+custom+exhaust

The black car with the transeverse magnas was the guy who sent me the sound clip...see if he's still around.

All the pics I have of my set-up are in the thread too. If you look closely you can see how the exhuast tubing goes inside the inlet of the magna, and the tip goes over the outlet and they got welded that way.

I found that stock SBC heat riser gaskets and rings mated right up to the cats, so I just had the place bend the angles I needed, slipped on the flanges, welded everything up and bolted them on with stainless bolts.

Thanks for our help. The vendor is sending me the muffler in about a week so I'll see if it works out. I didn't know Ferrari had diagrams on there site. I will have to check this out. As a side note, I never realized how good my vette assembly/shop manuals were until I popped open the F literature. :)
