    Hello "F"-Chatters,

I could really use some expertise of a few of the Ferrari "Gurus" out there.

I'm looking to refinish my 1979 308GTB Cromodora wheels. There has been a lot of dicussion in the past on this regarding whether or not to strip the wheels.........I'd like to strip and refinish mine to factory spec.

Except for a few paint (only) chips, they're in good condition, but would greatly benefit from a refinish.

As I look at them, it appears that they may have a series of different paint coats??? I'd like to emulate exactly (or close to) the facatory painting process.

My question is: Can anyone tell me what that process is and even paint number? I'll then communicate this to the painter and have peace of mind.

    Thank you for your help.

    chris.

In my case, I had the wheels plastic bead blasted to remove all traces of the old paint, and then powder coated in a silverish-grey color that exactly matched the OEM color. The end result was beautiful, and I couldn't be more pleased. Powder coating is much more durable than paint, and it also serves to hide minor pits and flaws. But, some other folks criticize powder coating as the finish is a bit 'thicker' than paint, and to their eyes that's not good, so you pay your money and take your choice. In either case, reproduction wheel decals that mimic the original black painted logos add the finishing touch.

IMO you dont want to strip 'em cuz' the factory primer IS at least two coats, maybe more.............

Griot's sends zinc primer, silver then clear coat in the 'kit', but the OEM is not clear coat.
