Planning summer vacation and looking for a destination along the Atlantic coast or Gulf Coast. I have stayed many years at Sea Island off the coast of Georgia and love it but a bit reluctant since it has gone through Chapter 11 and under new ownership. It is a private island w/ substantial homes and a resort. Ideal. I've done many years in old Naples but looking for something new but not all that different from those two experiences.

    Criteria:
    Privacy/secure
    High end
    rental cottages/homes
    proximity to fine dinning
    great local fishing/crabbing
    small town feel

Look at the Beaches of South Walton between Destin and Panama City along highway 30-A. Specifically at the villages of Seaside and Alys Beach. Very laid back place, no high-rise condos allowed, neat architecture, very natural surroundings, great local restaurants, not nearly as crowded as the big tourist destinations like Destin and Panama City.

You can spend as much as you want and make it as high end as you want. Alys Beach is more Mediterranean inspired and more luxurious (and expensive), whereas Seaside is built around traditional Southern beach cottage style architecture so I guess could be considered more "authentic" for the region. Prices there run the whole spectrum from reasonable to ridiculous. Also the nearby village of Watercolor has some nice, newer houses that rent for less than an similar house in Seaside.

As mentioned above, the watercolor/seaside/rosemary trio is pretty hard to beat. All three have very nice homes for rent. Watercolor is more resort feel and more wooded, seaside is more family oriented with bikes/shops/dining, and rosemary is full of shops and dining. I'd say rosemary is the nicest out of the three. All are within 2-3 miles of one another on 30A.
