I went to the dmv today to get my car inspected. They plugged in the obd and then the agent couldn't get car into 1st. The agent said he was pulling on the paddle shifters over and over again. I jumped in after 20 mins of them not being able to drive the car and I too couldn't get into gear.

I pulled the neg off the battery got it to reset and the car went into gear. Of course I failed the emissions test cause nothing was read properly. But that's not the issue. So since this my car has been acting up. The doors are not locking correctly or unlocking correctly. The car is not staying in gear. I was in n put it into first then, nothing. I was able to put it into 2nd and it drove off.

I don't know maybe it's me but the car just doesn't seem the same. Maybe it's me.

The report of the emissions says some things were unavailable like the o2 sensor.

    Any suggestions and or comments.

I get why you did it but disconnecting the battery cleared the codes so you may have a lot less to go on when diagnosing the problem. Have you checked if there are any codes in either of the ECUs?

    Is the battery fully charged?

You may need some pro help to get this resolved.

Correct me if I'm wrong but disconnecting the battery shouldn't reset any hard set codes just the soft intermittent. Which if the car is still acting up should re- present themselves in short order.

I think you need to get it scanned and see what comes up.

Brian- Intermittent conditions show up on her at undetermined intervals and are cleared by the reset. They may or may not show up later when your tech does an analysis on the problem, with odds heavily favoring not showing up when you want them to, her being female and all. After leaving the shop, if nothing is found, poof, there they are again.

Maybe it was just something as dumb as he or you not pressing the brake hard enough ?

There are so many possibilities including clutch & hydraulic level that as the others all suggest : get it looked at properly - these are not traditional cars for which everything can be fixed with a hammer, an adjustable spanner and some racer tape

    Sorry to hear.

There are so many possibilities on what the issue could be but I would start with the battery if I were you.

Is the battery fully charged? How old is your battery? If your battery is more than 4 years old I would get it replaced ASAP before it completely dies on you and get you stranded and its not a good idea for these cars to get a jump start from another battery....

These cars are very sensitive to power fluctuations.

No idea how old the battery is. I'll replace it just in case. Any issues replacing it? What's the best battery option for our cars. 2002 360

As was mentioned, could be you (or the inspector) was not pressing the brake pedal hard enough OR the pedal switch is going bad (is a known issue). I would start there as the switch is not expensive. There are two types of switches -- the early cars had a threaded barrel with a lock nut, later cars are different and I'm not sure when they changed so look at it before ordering and tell Daniel at Ricambi which one you have. The other thing that will not let it go in gear is the rear hatch switch. The contact surface on the rail gets dirty and will not complete the circuit. Just clean it.
Apart from a bad or low battery these are a couple of things to check.
Good luck and don't forget that you need to drive around a 100 miles for the OBDII information for the emissions test to be available again.

Uh, did they turn off the traction control before trying? Often that will mess up attempts to drive the car on rollers.

Not that I'm aware of. But funny you say that cause it got stuck when they drove it up on the roller.

Definitely start the experience off with a new battery. It just rules out so much. I'm due to replace mine this year as its about 4 years.

Ah F1. But I don't understand how traction control would make the F1 funky... I don't recall a link to the F1 system..

    Hi Matt,

Just turn off the main battery switch first. Do this prior to any electrical work on the car especially when changing the battery.

The switch is located on the top left inside the luggage compartment. There is an arrow indentation on the switch itself showing which way to turn to shut the battery power off.

For replacement battery - per most members here the Odyssey 34R-PC1500T is the best replacement and perfect match to OEM.

You can buy them locally or from Amazon for ~ $266.00.

Amazon.com: Odyssey Batteries 34R-PC1500T-A Automotive/Light Truck and Van Battery: Automotive

    Hope that helps.

Really? Are you certain? It is in the front trunk, passenger side near firewall - take another look. If the kill switch has truly been removed, I would be worried about what else has been "hacked"...

It's not there I looked over and over again. There is a small hole that probably leads down for the battery. But nothing

The battery master power switch has to be there. I dont think anyone would mess with it by removing it or relocating it.

What model year is your car?
Is it a Spider or Coupe?
But it shouldnt matter, the switch has to be there.....

Mine is a 2003 Spider and the switch again is located on the passenger side, top left on the firewall.

Can you take a photo of your luggage compartment showing the firewall?

    Dan

If there is a hole in the rear trunk liner then the switch knob has probably broken off. Take a flashlight and look into the hole. If you see a round piece of metal then it's probably the stem for the switch and the knob has been broken off. You may be able to get a pair of vice grips with long jaws to attach to the end of the shaft. Alternatively remove the rear cover and see where the switch is. I can't find a switch for the 360 on Ricambi's website but you can email him and see how much they are. You will definitely need to replace it as it's needed every time you need to work on the car. Very unusual to have broken like that. Alternatively the switch may have gone bad and the previous owner didn't want to spend the money on a replacement and removed it and connected the wires together.

Also when replacing the battery always remove the positive side of the cable first, then remove the ground side. Reverse the procedure during installation of the new battery.

This method prevents short circuit in the unlikely event of touching the cables to ground completing the circuit.

Very good point Alan. That certainly is a possibility.

Here you go, page 5.18 of the owners manual.
