ok, here's the story. i have 2 external hard disks. one to back up songs, and the other to back up pics. just earlier, when i put in the external hard disk into my pc, the icon of the external hard disk appears on My Computer.

but when i click to open the external hard disk, it opens the files and folders, then suddenly, within 3 seconds, there's a window appears and says it has to be shut down, because Windows has detected an Internet Explorer Privacy info ( what not ).

then i have no choice but to close the window. this external hard disk is pretty new, just bought it about a month ago.

    any advice?

Could be you've been infected with Spyware of some kind.
The error has to do with an internet access request wanting to store a cookie on your PC that is beyond the privacy level you have the IE browser privacy options set for.

What version of the IE browser are you running?

You could change your IE privacy option to something less protective, but realize this may give the spyware on your machine the control it wants to have (to potentially do more damage).

You should do a complete scan of your drives with a spyware detection utility. Make sure your utility has the latest upgrades in it.

Here is what the privacy choices look like in IE 7:
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Thanks for the replies guys. really appreciate it. i will try it on another pc, and i'll snap a pic of how the window that pops up look like.

edit : i scanned my external hard disk 3 times, and can't seem to detect anything.

Scanned with what application? The Registry is just one place to look. Suggest Ad-Aware SE at www.lavasoft.de

What security software do you have installed, if any, other than what comes with Windows?

    +! Aside from Ad-Aware, use spybot. http://www.majorgeeks.com/

Also, f you can, don't use IE, get Mozilla. When I scan my comp, I will only get a few cookies. When I go and scan my sisters, +100

Also, from the link I gave, get CCleaner (aka CrapCleaner). The first time I ran it, it got rid of 600+mb of crapp.

i've got AVG, at the moment, it's reliable enough for me. i was using Norton, got infected somehow, then i used McAfee. McAfee was good, but it detected a trojan virus too late the last time, and my pc crashed. so far, touch wood, i'm using AVG for about 3 months now, and there's no problem. i'm gonna buy a MacBook soon :)

yes, i've stopped using IE. Mozilla is so much more faster and easier to use, IMO.

also guys, thanks a lot for the help. had my cousin come over and take a look earlier today. it's confirmed the external hard disk problem, either the cable, or the hard disk itself. i'll be taking it to the guys i bought it from next weekend.

    cheers :)

AVG isn't any good. The developmental status of viruses/malware/trojans moves so quickly that companies that put out products that can effectively combat such things is not very good. What once was decent 6 months ago isn't good enough today. The very best product on the market has only a 60% hit rate. Not very good. A few months from now that product may be only 40% effective. Or far less.

I ran a test and AVG was 0% effective and at the top of the heap was a program that only caught 60% of the threats. I'm looking at other solutions. If I had to wager a guess right now, OS/X is only slightly better and Linux not a lot better than MS stuff. Java attacks and flaws in Flash are huge, most of them cross platform due to the nature of the programs. Crackers are smart and they are only getting better, no matter the platform.
