Guys, I have a friend who is considering buying an '87 GTS. The seller has disclosed that there is an oil leak from the rear main seal. How big of a service is this? What does it pay as far as book hours? Should he pass on this one, or would it be worth still getting a PPI done and possibly move forward on the car? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Josh Ferguson
Leaking rear main seal could equate into a clutch job...depending on how long it's been leaking. Not sure about the cost but make sure it hasn't spit all over the clutch.
exchange all old parts for new.this is last chance to buy parts in old inventory for price before recent 70% dollar dip.
Not sure about shop hours, however, if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it your self in a weekend. You can do the whole clutch, bearings, rear main seal, etc. for $400-500 in parts. If this was the only issue, I would continue with a PPI. As long as the seller is willing to discount the price (for owner to do work or shop), this is not a big issue.
I had a rear main seal leak on my '87 that did turn into a clutch job - it was completely fouled with oil. I am not very good with a wrench, so I had it done at my local independant shop. The costs were: Clutch disc $455.90 Pressure plate $331.50 T/O bearing $132.00 various seals / o-rings $75.00 Labor $1,125.00 Total $2,119.40 I would say it is still worth looking at. If that is the only issue the PPI turns up, your friend should be good to go.
