Need info about weak TR transmission issues....

    My questions and requests are as follows:

    What years of the TR's production are the input shafts and/or other related trans & t-case parts found to be most "unreliable/weak"?

    Or is this an across the TR/512 production run "problem"?

    What usally happens? Does the input shaft initially snap and then take other parts out with it down the line?

    Is the input shaft the main culprit or is there an inherient situation, such as the case flexing or a retainer or side cover or whatever that starts the failures?

    Does anyone have a broken shaft or other parts that might be willing to send them to me (even if just a piece of a shaft or other failed part) that I could use to determine the materials used to produce it, as well as what hardness the material is, etc.?

    I would like to have a company that analyzes metals do a full work-up on what it is made of and how it "measures up".

    My interest has been spurred by all the tales of how this is a problem area. My experience with building offroad rockcrawlers, which are producing 10,000+ lb/ft of torque at the differentials when in low/low range (250+ to 1 final drive ratios) get the hell beat out of them and don't fail often, when the proper materials are used. In other words, a burnout, a dumped clutch in a TR at high revs (both stupid acts I must say) or shifting down hard would be veiwed in the extreme offroad world as "babying" a vehicle. I am thinking that I may be able to R & D a "bulletproof upgrade" of trans and t-case parts at reasonable prices if I have the proper info and the insight of some of you TR veterans out there. And of course if there was indeed interest in such upgrades being available

    Let me add a, Why I am even asking about this "problem"?

    The "fact" that these failures are "happening", are cause enough to ask the question, Why?? and to what degree?...I have driven my TR since purchase(in '05-a DRIVER, '87, @43K ), and have noticed NONE of these symptoms. I drive this car HARD!!, and downshift to slow predominately, as "it should be".
    Now, to note, I do ALL of my own maintenence, capable as I am, accomplished in "Maintenance 101" from having owned and enjoyed many out of the ordinary examples such as Maserati, Lotus, Jags, etc., and as well I design, build, and drive/compete extreme offroad/rockcrawling vehicles in my off-season.
    I also know, from my background in metallurgy, via designing aftermarket CV axles, adapting Toyota transmissions to other manufacturers engines and mating multiple transfercases together to accomplish super low gear ratios, etc., that the construction of the material for it's intent is much different today than 20+ yrs. ago!
    I am offering a type of "White-Elephant" lottery of sorts, if you will to the problem that it seems that everyone but ME is having (knock on wood).........My intent............... to offer or suggest, a solution or upgrade to the situation.

    Although most seem to report some sort of shaft failure when trouble occurs (and stronger/tougher shafts wouldn't hurt ;)), I think the real solution is strengthening/reinforcing the case (to limit unwanted deflections). Here's a cross-section of the TR gearbox and the structure supporting the axial load from the pinion gear seems so much less significant than the usual cast iron rear end that it looks risky to me -- JMO.
