A really good friend gave me an A H Fox double barrel side by side 12 gauge shotgun this past weekend for a graduation gift. The gun is in excellent condition (almost like new) and I am told is from 1928. The gun is a marked Sterlingworth and made in Philadelphia, PA. The serial number is 121XXX and the gun does not have any fancy engraving, but it does have two triggers. Upon receiving the gun I was told that this gun is among the best American Shotguns.

While the gun looks beautiful, I do not know the first thing about shotguns. I did a quick Google search and it appears that a person can easily spend $100K on a Purdey or Holland & Holland shotgun, but I found very little history on A H Fox or information on Shotguns in general. I also found very little info on the difference between a 12 gauge, 16, gauge, 20 gauge, etc and what gauge is best to use. It seems most shotguns are 12 gauge but I do not know why.

Any info on the A H Fox gun I received or any basic info on shotguns would be appreciated. Also, what does a $50K Holland & Holland shotgun get me in terms of quality and performance when compared to the A H Fox I received?

Fox is no Purdy or H&H, but they are good honest guns. Ask your questions of these guys:

Here, I'll save you the trouble.
It appears your gun was made in 1928, and if it is really "as new" worth about $1500:

Ken...take a ride up to Bernardsville and see Griffin & Howe http://www.griffinhowe.com/home.cfm and ask for Joe Prather. Joe can give you some background, check the gun's condition and value. He can also suggest the best ammo for use in the gun. I have a Cogswell and Harrison from 1924 that I shoot reguarly but with 2 1/2 inch shells and low pressure.
