You all know I drive my car to work quite a bit -- in fact, it's out in the garage now.

I do keep a low profile, so not many people here know I have it, and none outside my department do. The parking garage is for the whole 40 story building, so the car could belong to anyone in the place.

We have a company outing next week offsite, and there's going to be many departments there, not just mine. I'm debating whether driving the car is a good idea, or should I fire up the old pickup and take it instead.

    Thoughts?

I drove to work too, but when we had a charity employee car show I brought nothing. I got more attention from people who couldn't believe I didn't bring the Ferrari. :) When I've asked stuff like this before, conclusion is usually Ferraris and your work may not hurt you, but definitely don't help you.

Excellent question. I work for myself, so I am of no use, but I look forward to reading the advice.

BTW, I love your GTB conversion. What a great idea. Best of both worlds.

Drive it, if anyone asks, just tell them you have a wonderful neighbor who lets you drive it when he is out of town, and how much you wish you could afford it...maybe you'll get a raise.

    Tillman,

It really depends on your position. If you are considered "a brain" and kind of out there, then drive it. They will think it's just another quirky thing you do.

If you try to keep a low profile at work then don't.

I would drive mine and hang out with our senior VP who is an American iron guy. He would make fun of me and me him. Then again people expect me to be a bit quirky and don't really think anything of it.

If you have to ask, then don't.

Everyone at work knows I'm a gear head and it doesn't matter.

So what happens when you are talking to someone in your department and a person from another department and the person from your department says,"So Tillman did you drive your Ferrari today?" That may put you in an interesting situation. In that case I would drive it! Then you could casually respond, "Yes I did drive the ferrari today."

Or, conversely, he could say, "no, but thanks for blowing my cover as Tillman, International Man of Mystery."

I say drive it. I was unsure about taking the Esprit to our company holiday party, but when pulling up to the valet, I met another guy that is a closet gearhead who has got a garage full of vipers and other toys. Would have never met him otherwise. Nobody else seemed to care.

Really I don’t see the issue here, but then again I don’t know what you do work wise… You work at Burger king or Wal-Mart where it would be an issue? I personally don’t think so. But no matter what you do for work you worked hard for what you have and your peers will see that way.

Drive it, be happy and who cares what they all think, well unless your boss drives some old beat up VW bug.
