I am looking at car. I want to know if the cam timing is off.
Is the best way to tell is if the distributor is way advanced?
Need photo to compare with car I'm looking at.

do you have the valve covers off? The cams actually have lines scribed on them and the (I believe) front cap, so you can always tell if the cams are "basically" lined up properly.

If it's a given that the cams are lined up, then it's simply a question of finding TDC on piston one and making sure spark plug wire 1 is going to the right position on the cap, and that the points are properly gapped etc

No different than any other car.

    Here is the firing order:

what kind of lambo? here's for espada:

Like Fred said, the cams have index marks.

    More information?

    It a Jarama.
When I first got my Countach many years ago, Wil Degroot came to pickup the car and when he looked at the motor, I think he said it is off. When I asked how he knew, he point out something on the motor (which I thought may have been the distributor) an said something like when "that" is set all the way" or turned or advanced which I think he said was a tell tale sign that the cam timing maybe off and people turn it to cover what's really wrong.
Remember, this was 7yrs ago and just want to see if the same thing is on this jarama. you know how some "local" shops say they know on a Lambo but never have worked on one.

Oh, I see. It's not that the cam timing's off, is that the distributor needs to be pulled out and moved around one tooth...um, in the proper direction :) (make sure to keep the rotor in the exact same position, in relation to the distributor body -- take the cap off and maybe draw a mark on the dizzy where the rotor is for reference)

The dizzy is too far over in whatever direction it's in, it should be centered in the hold-down slots, not all the way to one end or the other (ie not full clockwise against the end of the slot, or not full counter-clockwise against the other end of the slot)

I mean, the timing could be absolutely perfect with the dizzy full-on in one direction or the other, but there is simply no room for adjustment if it is.

It could be viewed as somewhat of an aesthetic thing -- I mean if the timing is already spot on.

Is the Jarama a single dizzy?

    Fred

PS: Don't blame me if you screw it all up :-D
