Does anyone know of someone who can do Pre Purchase Inspection somewhere near Wilmington, NC? Or maybe a club member who I could pay to go and look it over?

This is about 130 miles southwest of Raleigh, NC. About 250 miles SW of Charlotte, NC, IIRC.

I don't think one of the national ppi agents will help me, since they consist of insurance adjusters who will give the car a clean bill of health if it does not show collision damage.

What am I to do, if the nearest place is 130-250 miles away? Do people have prospective purchases hauled about for PPI's? Perhaps someone in the area could do a once over before I spend $1,000 on towing and PPI for an unknown car? If it were a $1,000,000 Ferrari, this cost would not bother me, but it is just your standard, dated styling, run of the mill, $60,000 job.

I have often bought old cars sight unseen, and never had a problem, and never used a ppi. But, the price to correct minor hidden faults of such cars couldn't have exceeded the value of those cars, as they could with this one. They were american cars, and all the sellers turned out honest. And generally they were even cheaper than this car. Part of me thinks I should just buy it, but everything and everyone says a PPI is a must.

    Thanks a lot.

Looking at a 348 in Birmingham , Al. The two shops I was told to use have been"hit or miss" according to some locals as well as a Ferrari tech here in Atlanta who knows both shops.

The owner of course is not keen on me trucking his car across state lines to Georgia(Atlanta). Ron Reineke, indy F tech here is scheduled to go there next week...BUT needs access to a lift, plus travel time plus the $600 for the PPi; hence I figure I will be into this PPI for at least $1000, if not more...but better a $1k than a $44K mistake!

Foreign Cars Italia is up in Charlotte/Greensboro if thats close?

    Good Luck, dogdoc

I don't know if it's too far, but Raleigh is about 1 1/2 hrs from Greensboro. In Greensboro, Foreign cars Italia is a great Ferrari dealer that does a great job with PPI's. I can personally recommend them from experience (even though I didn't buy the car that they checked for me).
A PPi is important on these cars, because as you said, repairs can add up real quickly. I thought I was buying a great car, and was willing to pay at the upper end for it. After the PPI, I discovered it needed about $8,000 in stuff that I would never see on my own, $6500 of it was just for a leaking steering rack that needed replacement (common problem). The prior owner didn't want to even budge a penny, so I flew home without a car. I'm glad I did, I wound up with a better car for less money if you include the fixes. A car that is a great deal, may not be such a great deal if it even needs one repair that another car that you are looking at doesn't need. If you have to take a gamble without a PPI, make sure that it is figured into your offering price. Leave a little room for repairs. Also, account for the first belt service that you will have to do. If possible, find one that is done within a few months, if not, account for that in the price as well. If a $3500 belt service was done 2 years ago on one car and just done on another car. The second car is automatically worth at least $2,000 more!
Good luck, make sure you read all the buyers guide info, as well as anything else you can find.

What kind of car? Is it a Ferrari? What's the serial number? I was just a few states away this week, maybe I could've flown over to check it out. Is it for sale through a dealer or a private seller? Have you received pictures and history? What are your concerns? What do you know about the car? What don't you know about it?

It is a 512tr. I have the ad from the private seller who is the 3rd owner, and also found the ad from the guy who sold it to him, who was also a private seller. I have spoken to the seller at length, and he told me a lot about it, including who he bought it from and where he was located, and his name, and all that matches the old ad I found later. So does the price he claims to have paid. SO, I have not caught him in any lies. He is not too familiar with the technical history of the testarossa model. He loves the car, that is obvious. He previously had a regular testarossa, and says this car is a lot nicer to drive. He has not done any major service since he has owned it during the last 6 years because that stuff was done just prior to his purchase. He did do fluid changes each year. He has his receipts and all receipts since new. If you read the previous ad, it shows all the work the previous guy did. All good stuff, and all pretty recent on mileage. What I don't know is if there are hidden problems. According to the seller, nothing has broken in 6 years and 3k miles, except the seat belt motors, which he does not care about. I have a few pictures, but they are low resolution, and generally pictures can't show minor flaws. If I had time, I would fly and look at it. It strikes me as a good deal. But I could be wrong. This guy paid $90,000 in 2006. I may be able to get it at $60, but would have $70 after the scheduled major service that it needs, and the tax.

Current ad: A/C ice cold, All scheduled maintenance, All records, Always garaged, Excellent condition, Looks & drives great, Must see, No accidents, Title in hand, Very clean interior, Well maintained $65k

Old ad from 2nd owner, who listed it on FML

512 TR, S/N ZFFLG40A4P0096414 (1993 USA model). Red with tan interior. 30K major service with belts, new clutch, water pump overhaul, four new Michelin Pilot Sports and front clear Autobahnd protective film at 31,860 miles. Tubi exhaust. New brake rotors and pads at 27,573 miles. Excellent condition with all tools, manuals and service records. Kept in heat and humidity controlled garage. One of the cleanest examples. 33,178 miles. $94,500. 12/04
