i would think that if it passed CA, it'll pass here. Make sure there are no codes, do a couple drive cycles or take it to david at Morrespeed and his guys will nurse-maid it though the inspection. FoA will do the same thing if you are worried about passing (aftermarket cats, etc)
AFAIK, on the modern cars (OBDII), they don't do a tailpipe emission test in TX -- they just look to see if there are any error codes present.
Is there any reason you are concerned it won't pass? Just make sure all your lights work and wiper blades are good to keep from failing something stupid. Tires should be at least 2/32nds". Tint of front driver and passenger windows must be no darker than 25%. Make sure the parking brake can hold a little (very little) throttle in first (don't try this in front of a wall or other mostly immovable object). For emissions, like others stated, it is OBD2 so they will plug in and check for ready states, CEL functionality, and if there are any current codes. You aren't allowed any codes. You are allowed up to one "Not Ready". If your battery hasn't died recently you should be good there. If you just replaced your battery or had to charge it you may need to complete a few drive cycles to get all systems ready. You can check for ready status with most cheap scantools. Most aftermarket equipment is acceptable in TX. You must have cats, though. Even if you have high flow 100 cell cats as long as there's no code in your ECU you should be fine.
I just got my check engine lights to clear on a '97 F355 and got it inspected/green sheeted today...Travis and Williamson counties (Austin) do have some emissions testing as well as some other large counties (Harris, Dallas, etc). I have no idea how that works but I don't think it's as nearly as strict as any CA smog you'd have to complete there.
My car passed with flying colors. No problems... Thanks for all your referrals. I'm not too fond of the two stickers that attach to the front winshield. Is everybody here running front license plates?
The State troopers especially look for them to bounce radar.....local LEO will definately maka a stop to chat about it, and may well issue citation. As one good spirited guy told me: "Texas gives you two plates, we want to see them both!" There's some nice removal brackets sold, that grab your grill bars and easily come off....
Texas law currently states you must display both plates but there is no penalty for failing to do so. So you can get stopped, get a ticket issued, plead guilty, and pay no fine. This was because in the 2011 legislative session they forgot to assign a penalty for it. By sep. 1 there should be a penalty re-attached unless they forget again.
Thanks Steve, that's good to know. I'm just not ready to drill a whole in my front bumper. Nor do I have a bracket for the car. Coming from CA, I thought they were strick on front plates. However, was never stopped with all past cars displaying no plates. Thanks
